  • Comment: He appears as a Farmer on the 1814 Robinson Township Tax Roll. He was a "single male" at the time. He was willed land, containing a Saw Mill, that his father purchased from Robert Boyd, bounded by Isaac Walker on the west and his father's land in the east. A part of this farm, comprising ten acres of wheat and eight acres of rye, was rented to Daniel Brinaman. In Nov 1839, his residence comprised 350 acres.1,14
  • Census: James Ewing was living at home with his father in Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1820; James Ewing Sq; 2 Males 19<>25, 1 Male 45<; 1 Female 45<; 1 free colored male and 1 free colored female.15,3

  • LegalDocument: The descendants of James Ewing are discussed in a petition for partition of land owned by his father James Ewing filed by William Ewing at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (land description includes “being a piece of land purchased from John Cascadon by James Ewing, Dec, after he had made his Will of his other Estates”; descendancy information: 1st) “William Ewing eldest son”, 2nd) “Samuel Ewing since deceased leaving ifsue James since deceased leaving ifsue Samuel, Margaret Letitia. • LegalDocument: James Ewing's son, James Harvey Ewing, filed a Petition for Land Partition (regarding his father's land) on 5 December 1855 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania.7
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: His tombstone cites Nov 1839 as the date of death. Ardinger cites 6 Oct 1839, referencing Presbyterian Advocate Excerpts. No other sources (discovered to date) support this Oct 1839 date. Further, his son's - James Harvey Ewing's - 1855 land partition Petition cites "on or about the Sixth day of November A.D. 1839" as the date of death.19,1,7,20
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: James Ewing h/o Rebecca (Robb) Ewing shows up in Moon Township in the 1830 Census. Given this, he (or his father) may be the "James Ewing" named as Executor for Samuel Ewing's Will. Added 20 Sep 2006: According to Fife, the James in Moon Township is probably a different one. He is related to the Samuel and Alexander in Moon Township. This needs to be researched further.16,21
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle and Ardinger both cite 1781 as the birth year. Census profiling, however, indicates that the date of birth was between 1785 and 1789. [Getting this range requires, however, considerable interpretation of the census records. See Census Profiles for the details.] Riddle's Cemetery Compilation says he was aged 51 at death; this comes from 51? appearing in McCandless' Lot Sheet. As a result of this, 1788 is recorded as the birth year.1,2,3,8,9
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Non-family members in 1830 census: 1 male 20<>29. Note that James Ewing appears to be mis-recorded as 20<>29 in this census year when he was ~42 years old. His wife is correctly recorded as 20<>29. The "extra" male might be a relative of Rebecca.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1820 census implies James Ewing was living at home and therefore unmarried at this time. His first child was born 1826. His first wife was Lilly and they had no children. It's therefore assumed that James Ewing married Lilly after 1820 and married Rebecca Robb before 1826.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Carson/Wooley's compilation of birth/marriage information indicates that "Annie" was born ca 1775 in Caroline Co, Maryland, and that Alexander, Samuel, Mary, James and John were all born in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, 3 Aug 1773, 2 Nov 1775, 1777, 1785 and ~1786, respectively. This implies all sorts of birth date conclusions implied by the order of names in Squire Jame's Will and Census Profiling. The birth order and dates need to be sorted out.22
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Eric Ewing's Ewing Family Tree, posted on Ancestry.com, doesn't list Sarah or John J. as children.6

  • Married Name: As of 7 July 1808,her married name was Walker.1
  • Comment: There is a charming tale in Life and Reminiscences by William G. Johnston (1828-1913). He writes of the warmth of the Walkers as he remembered Isaac II, "a white-haired and white-bearded patriarch". Mr Johnston continues "the family consisted of three sons and two daughters. For many years they furnished my father's family with butter of unsurpassed excellence". Ewing Walker, the eldest son, is described as a "strapping big fellow" who "went frequently to the city carrying loads of flour in barrels". The family "gathered in the kitchen, watching the operations of Polly and Jane, as they cooked the supper by a log fire in the large open fireplace". [from Scott]4
  • Census*: Isaac and Ann Ewing lived in Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1850. • ResearchNote: Research Note: Isaac Walker is explicitly listed in the 1850 census but so is his wife, Ann Ewing, as a Widow. Because Isaac Walker died in mid-1850, it appears that he had a "dual status" w.r.t. the census.1,10

  • LegalDocument: Isaac Walker is mentioned in a Petition for Land Partition (regarding his father's land) filed by James Harvey Ewing on 5 December 1855 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (The petition mentions: "James H. Ewing, Eldest son"; sons John and Joseph and daughters Mary Ann Ewing and Emily Eliza Ewing (minors represented by their guardian Isaac Walker Jr) are co-Petitioners; ”William Ewing intermarried with Sarah Ewing daughter of … James Ewing deceased, said Sarah having died intestate and without issue” is a co-Petitioner; “Rebecca Johnston late the widow of … James Ewing deceased now intermarried with Andrew Johnston” is a co-Petitioner; “James Ewing died intestate on or about the Sixth day of November A.D. 1839, leaving issue Seven children”, “Rebecca widow of the said intestate surviving him”, “Jane Ewing … one of the daughters of said intestate when of full age sold her interest in the Real Estate … to Isaac Walker Jr (guardian of her siblings) and William E. Boyd formerly Guardian”; “Sarah Ewing since the death of her Father, intermarried with William Ewing … and died on or about the Twenty Seventh day of April A.D. 1855, intestate and without issue”; land was “all that certain tract of land situate partly in Robinson and partly in South Fayette Townships, Allegheny County State of Pennsylvania bounded by the lands of John Ewings heirs, William McConnell, Isaac Walker Jr, Ewing Walker Robert Smith and William Bell, containing Three hundred and forty Eight Acres more or less, and allowances for Roads” [Land is subsequently split into three parts and taken by James H., John and Joseph].).6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: An Isaac Walker appears in the 1798 Tax Rolls. It is probably Isaac Walker (the father) h/o Mary Stewart, but it might actually be Isaac Walker (the son) h/o Ann Ewing.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Isaac Walker is explicitly listed in the 1850 census but so is his wife, Ann Ewing, as a Widow. Because Isaac Walker died in mid-1850, it appears that he had a "dual status" w.r.t. the census.1,5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: In the 1850 Census, Matthew Patton is living with the Isaac and Ann (Ewing) Walker family. Also listed is a Mary Patton, age 21 and explicitly listed as born in Pennsylvania (whereas Matthew is explicitly listed as being born in Ireland). It's possible that he married into this family in some way.

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinder cites 1788/1795 as the marriage date for Esther Ewing and James Botd. However, Esther would have been only ~10 years old in 1788. The marriage date is therefore assumed to be 1795 when she is ~18. This still predates the birth of her first child.1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Will prepared by James Ewing h/o Mary McKown implies that the birth order of his daughters was Esther, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary. This order consistently appears in other documents concerning James Ewing’s estate. This implies that the birth dates for Esther and Elizabeth are possibly in error.
The birth order and dates need to be sorted out.8

  • He was the son of Samuel J. Ewing and Letitia Ann McCurdy.
  • Marriage*: James Ewing married Elizabeth McCandless, daughter of Alexander McCandless and Margaret Records, on 1 September 1831 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (minister: Rev. J. K. Cunningham).1,2
  • Death*: James Ewing died on 4 February 1841 at Hanover Township, Beaver Co, Pennsylvania, at age 46.1,2

  • LegalDocument*: James Armor, Adminsitrator of James Ewing's estate, filed an Adminstration Account in 1846 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (He owned "a lot of land situate in Hanover Township, Washington County, at a place called Murdocksville, adjoining lands of John Morgan, James and William Hood containing about nineteen acres strict measure, on which is erected a log house 20 by 22 feet one & a half stories high & a frame store house 20 by 14 feet one story high also a cabbin bar & stable in bad repair also 1 smith shop -- there is about 12 or 14 acres cleared on the premises and under fense. The lot fronts on the state road leading from Pittsburgh to Frankfort distant from Pittsburgh 21 miles & from Frankfort 5 miles." In addition: he was born in 1799, he died in 1841, he was the son of Samuel J. Ewing, he provided ten dollars yearly to Letitia Ewing (mother? daughter?) during her natural life, Elizabeth Ewing was his widow, he owed money to William Riddle, and Samuel Ewing sued his estate for $408 in June 1841.).5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Regarding date of birth ... Ardinger gives 22 Nov 1794, citing KKR as his source. Riddle gives 23 Oct 1799, citing no source (but it's probably the Glass Family History). Riddle also indicates that "KKR records cite History of Indiana County", that "His executor's account says he was born 1799", and "Notes in Leona Scott's files cite 23 Nov 1794 as the date of birth". Ardinger's date is used until this can be resolved. Regarding place of birth ... Ardinger cites Moon Township, WER cites Elder's Ridge (again, probably with the Glass Family History as the source) and indicates that "Notes in Leona Scott's files cite ... Elder's Ridge as the place of birth". Ardinger's place of birth is used to maintain consistency with the cited date of birth.2,1,6,7
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Regarding date/place of death ... Riddle's records indicate that: KKR's data says death was 1842 (probably from the History of Indiana County); notes in Leona Scott's files say that the date of death was 20 Dec 1841 (maybe 1844); and that Murdocksville was the place of death. Riddle's records also indicate, however, that Ardinger's data say the date was 4 Feb 1841 and the place was Hanover Township, Beaver County. Ardinger's cited data are used until this can be resolved.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger cites sons Andrew, Hugh and John Samuel giving Pennsylvania Archives and Partitions Docket as the sources. These children apparently come from an ambiguity in the document regarding the partitioning of James Ewing's land. The part of the document pertaing to Samuel J. Ewing is: “Samuel Ewing since deceased leaving ifsue James since deceased leaving ifsue Samuel, Margaret Letitia. Nancy, [space left here, possibly for a missing name] Hugh, John. Samuel and Andrew. Mary married to David McKee and Elizabeth Married to George Shearer also Lettecia widow of the said James Ewing”. The ambiguity is created by the space and the period following “Andrew”. Riddle's parsing is that the phrase "Hugh, John. Samuel and Andrew" does not specify sons for James Ewing but rather indicates sons Hugh, John, Samuel and Andrew of his father Samuel J. Ewing.1,8
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Louisa L. Ewing is not mentioned as a child of James Ewing in the 1840 petition for distribution of Squire James Ewing's land. Note that she died, in infancy, in 1839.8

  • He was the son of Samuel J. Ewing and Letitia Ann McCurdy.
  • Marriage*: William Harvey Ewing married Sarah Ewing, daughter of James Ewing and Rebecca Robb, before 1855 (no children).4

  • Comment: William Ewing's will, written Jun 1845 and probated Aug 1845 says: "Son William that part of my land joining lands on the south with my sons David and James by the conditional line and on the north by a conditional line ... my house with furniture; cattle, farming utensils and grain in the ground." William's cousin William Harvey Ewing was willed land on the north side of the conditional line.9
  • Will*: William Harvey Ewing prepared a Will in 1881 (Armstrong Co, Will Book Vol 3, pg 478, Est #3818).1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: William Ewing s/o James Ewing, in his will written Jun 1845 and filed Aug 1845, bequeathed his nephew William Harvey Ewing “the north part of the tract of land on which I now live including a saw mill”. This may have been because William Ewing’s 1841 petition for partitioning the land of James Ewing failed to identify William Harvey Ewing as s/o Samuel J. Ewing resulting in William Harvey Ewing not receiving “his due”. Alternatively, it may be because William Harvey Ewing had, by the time the Will was written, moved in and he considered him an "heir".10,11,12
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1841 petition by William Ewing s/o James Ewing for partition of his father's land fails to identify William Harvey Ewing s/o William's brother Samuel Ewing. But William Ewing's later Will gives land to his nephew William Harvey Ewing. It's possible/probable that William Ewing's bequest of land to William Harvey Ewing was done to correct the failure to include William Harvey Ewing in the land partitioning. alternatively, when the Will was prepared, William Harvey Ewing was living in the William Ewing family and he may have been considered an heir.10,11,12
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The census records for 1820-1840 indicate several non-family members living in the William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing Household. One in 1840 appears to be a nephew, William Harvey Ewing s/o William's brother Samuel. The others are unknown: 1820, 1 Female 26<>45 and 1 Male 10<>15; 1830, 1 Male 30<>39, 2 Females 30<>39, 1 Female 10<>15; 1840, 1 Male 10<>14 in 1840. These may have been orphaned or widowed relatives. alternatively, they could have been farm hands.3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger and Riddle cite ~1801 as date of birth. Census profiling, however, implies a birth date range of 1805/1810. This range is used as the date of birth.1,2,3

  • Birth*: Samuel Ewing was born between 1816 and 1820.1

  • Census: Samuel Ewing.2 was living at home with his parents in Fayette Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1820; Samuel Ewing; 2 Males 0<>9, 2 Males 10<>15, 2 Males 19<>25, 1 Male 45<; 2 Females 16<>25, 1 Female 45<

  • Census: Samuel Ewing was living at home with his father in Kiskiminitas Township, Armstrong Co, Pennsylvania, in 1840; Letisha Ewan; 1 Male 20-29; 1 Female 40-49.4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: (1) Ardinger’s records have a different Samuel Ewing as a son of Samuel J. Ewing. His family group comes from the 1850 Census (South Fayette, Dwelling 25, family 26) and has Samuel Ewing being a widower with children Esther, Eleanor, James, Caroline and Mary. He additionally traces: 1) the marriage of Esther to William Galbreath, using Beers’ Compilation, the 1850 Census and a Galbreath Will as his sources, and 2) the marriage of Eleanor to John Gilfillan, using the History of Allegheny Co, the 1850, a 1903 obituary and a “Carnegie Signal Item” as sources. (2) Riddle’s data are used for the following (not all that strong) reasons: a) the children’s names in Riddle’s group more closely match the names being used in the parental and sibling families, and 2) KKR independently cites the same family group, probably using the McGinness/Ford Family History as his source (although KKR cites a different wife, Sarah Chamberlain).5,6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: There's something seriously wrong with this family group. It appears from census profiling that he was still living with his mother in 1830 and 1840. But other sources indicate that he was married by 1828. Much more research needs to be done to sort it all out.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: There is an 1880 North Fayette census record for Samuel (65), Mary (Wife, 65) and Minnie Baylor (GDaught, 4, b. Indiana, father b. Indiana, mother b. Ohio). It's indexed as being for Oakdale. Other families in the "neighborhood" include Hugh Wallace, Mathew Galbraith and Harvey Thompson.7

Jane Ewing

  • Birth*: Jane Ewing was born between 1831 and 1835.1,2
  • She was the daughter of James Ewing and Rebecca Robb.
  • Death*: Jane Ewing died before 17 August 1844.2
  • Census: Jane Ewing was living at home with her father in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1840; Rebecca Ewing; 3 Males 5<>10; 2 Females 0<>5; 1 Female 5<>10; 1 Female 10<>15; 1 Female 30<>40.3
  • RelAdmit*: On 27 June 1844, Jane Ewing was on examination into the Montour Presbyterian Church, Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania.4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Montour Church Session Minutes show an admission upon examination for "Miss Jane Ewing" on 27 Jun 1844. This fits with it being Jane Ewing d/o James and Rebecca (Robb) Ewing. There is no totally convincing evidence for this conclusion; but it has been entered as an hypothesis because there appear to be no other Jane Ewing who would have been of the right age in 1844 for an admission upon examination.4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Rationale for "before 17 Aug 1844" death date: Jane Ewing's mother's 28 May 1840 petition for a guardian for minor children says "Petitioner's Husband left ifsue seven children". Her mother's 17 Aug 1844 petition for a guardian for minor children says "late husband James Ewing left ifsue six children". Her sister, Sarah Ewing, filed a coincident, 17 Aug 1844, guardianship petition in which "Eldest daughter" is changed to read "daughter". the implication is that there was a daughter - Jane - who was older than Sarah and who was alive in 1840 but not alive on 17 Aug 1844.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: There is a rationale for her being born before 28 May 1826: Her mother's 28 May 1840 petition for a guardian for her minor children says "Petitioner's Husband left ifsue seven children" but Jane is not included in the list of "six of whom ... are minors under the age of Fourteen years". This implies that she survived her father but was older than 14 as of 28 May 1840. However, the 1830 census record for James and Rebecca (Robb) Ewing does not cite any children. Further, census profiling indicates that she was born 1831/35.5,1

  • She was the daughter of James Ewing and Rebecca Robb.
  • Marriage*: Sarah Ewing married William Harvey Ewing, son of Samuel J. Ewing and Letitia Ann McCurdy, before 1855 (no children).3
  • Death*: Sarah Ewing died on 27 April 1855.3
  • Burial*: She is buried (interred April 1855) in the Montour Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, Lot A-79.5; Inscription: Sarah wife of Wm Ewing died Apl 27, 18?5) (1855) (1835) in the 25 year of her age.2,5,6,7
  • Marriage*: She married John M. Ewing before 1863.
  • Census: Sarah Ewing was living at home with her father in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1840; Rebecca Ewing; 3 Males 5<>10; 2 Females 0<>5; 1 Female 5<>10; 1 Female 10<>15; 1 Female 30<>40.8
  • LegalDocument: Sarah Ewing is mentioned in a petition nominating William Ewing Boyd as guardian of "six ... minors under the age of Fourteen years" filed by Rebecca Robb on 28 May 1840 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania.9
  • Comment: Wm E. Boyd was her guardian until Dec 1844 and then continued as her guardian for some period.2
  • LegalDocument: Sarah Ewing is a subject of a Guardianship Account for the minor children of James Ewing h/o Rebeccca (Robb) Ewing filed by William Ewing Boyd on 23 October 1843 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (1/2 Apr 1841 and 1 Apr 1842: "Rebecca Ewing for clothing maintenance &c of Wards", 1 Apr 1943: "Andrew Johnston for clothing maintenance &c of Wards").10
  • LegalDocument*: Sarah Ewing, daughter of Rebecca Robb and James Ewing filed a Guardianship Petition and William Ewing Boyd agreed to serve on 17 August 1844 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, ("Eldest daughter of James Ewing" is changed to read "daughter of James Ewing" in the petition; "Petitioner is a minor above the age of Fourteen years").11
  • RelAdmit*: On 16 April 1847, Sarah Ewing was admitted on exam into the Montour Presbyterian Church, Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania.12
  • Census: Sarah Ewing was living at home with her father in Findley Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1850; Dwelling 384, Family 384; Real Estate Value ; John ? (M.) Ewing, Carpenter, 25; Sarah - 20, David Forbeson.13
  • LegalDocument: Sarah Ewing is mentioned in a Petition for Land Partition (regarding his father's land) filed by James Harvey Ewing on 5 December 1855 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (The petition mentions: "James H. 1855, intestate and without issue”; land was “all that certain tract of land situate partly in Robinson and partly in South Fayette Townships, Allegheny County State of Pennsylvania bounded by the lands of John Ewings heirs, William McConnell, Isaac Walker Jr, Ewing Walker Robert Smith and William Bell, containing Three hundred and forty Eight Acres more or less, and allowances for Roads” [Land is subsequently split into three parts and taken by James H., John and Joseph].).3
  • Census*: Sarah and John M. Ewing lived in North Fayette Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1880. Living at home with them was/were their child(ren) Clellie and Fanie; Dwelling 108; Family 111; John M Ewing, Carpenter, 58; Sarah (Wife), Sarah J (Wife), 45, Keeping H; Samuel ? (Son), 24, Carpenter; Clellie (Daugh), 17, Music teacher; Fanie (Daugh), 15, School teacher.14
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: She does not appear in WER Montours Cemetery Compilation. There is, however, a Sarah Ewing in Lot A-079.5 with birth/death dates of 1850 and 27 Apr 1875. This comes from McCandless' Lot Sheet showing the 1875 date; but the Lot Sheet says "more like 1835 or 1855 no date given in old map". From Riddle's notes from his reading of the Montour Cemetery, she died 27 Apr 1855 but this might be 1835. The date 1855, and the fact that she died at age 25 intestate and leaving no issue, comes from the clear indication of this in James Harvey Ewing’s 5 Dec 1855 petition.5,7,6,3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The ONLY Sarah Ewing in her age range that shows up in the 1850 Census is one aged 21 who is living with John M. Ewing and David Ferbison in Findley Township. [Ferbison might be be a corruption of Harbison.] In addition, there are no Sarah's w/o William Ewing entries in the 1850 census. So ... for the moment ... and even though it's a stretch ... it's assumed that the Sarah Ewing living with John M. Ewing and David Ferbison in Findley Township is the daughter of James and Rebecca (Robb) Ewing. [Note that all of her siblings, except Emily Eliza, show up living with someone in the 1850 Census.]13
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Sarah Ewing who married William harvey Ewing DIDN'T marry John M. Ewing; there are two Sarah's. This needs to be sorted out.

  • Residence*: From his father he received land north of the railroad and Robinson's Run near Ewingsville, Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania (a small village of about a dozen homes on the 1000-plus acres owned by his grandfather Squire James). He later moved to 100 acres of land northeast of Montour Presbyterian Church. At his death, he owned timber land which was sold at auction.

  • Comment: Samuel Woods Ewing's maternal grandfather, Samuel Woods, left $100 to all grandsons named after him. Samuel Woods Ewing was a "minor under age of 14" when his grandfather died (in 1868) and petitioned, on 7 Jul 1868, for a guardian. His father, James Harvey Ewing, and Jacob H. Miller were bound for $200 as guardians.1
  • Comment: James Harvey Ewing was very active in the Montour Presbyterian Church, Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. He was 'admitted on exam' on 7 Feb 1860. At various times, he was SS Teacher, SS Superintendent, and Ruling Elder. He appears in the church's Charter of Incorporation, 28 November 1868: "... the following named persons shall be Trustees. to wit, James Neeley, Phillip McCandless, lt. E. McBride, Alex. E. Stewart, Jas. H. Ewing, John Meanor".13
  • Census: Jane and James Harvey Ewing lived in (Temperanceville Post Office) Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1870. • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger cites only the following children: Sarah E., Samuel Woods, Lily J., Mary Agnes, and William.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: 1) The citation in the 1850 Census, saying that James Harvey Ewing was living with James McFadden, is not totally clear. It might be "James W. Ewing". 2) This was after the death of James Harvey Ewing's father (in 1839). But his mother was still living at this time; she didn't die until 1884. Perhaps he was apprentised and learning a trade.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger gives 4 Dec 1832 as his birth date, 23 Jan 1875 as his date of death, and 9 Mar 1854 as his date of marriage. Kraynek gives 4 Dec 1832 as his birth date and 26 Jan 1875 as his death date. Riddle gives 2 Dec 1832 as the birth date, 8 Mar as his marriage date, and 25 Jan 1875 as his date of death. Riddle's dates are used because they appear to come from a bible record. However, note that the difference between the 23rd and 25th of Jan 1875 might be the difference between the date of his death and the date of his burial.2,3,1

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1850 Census shows Joseph Ewing and Mary Ann Ewing living with Isaac and Ann (Ewing) Walker. Isaac Walker was a guardian for these Ewing's, minor children of James Ewing whose widow, Rebecca Robb, had re-married.1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: It's possible that John J. Ewing and Joseph were twins.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1860 Census record implies that he never married. However, in the 1870 Census for Temperanceville, Union Borough, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, there is a Joseph Ewing family: Joseph (34), Emma (27), Charles (7), Geo (5), Harvey (3) and Clifford (3 mo, b Mar). His occupation is hard to decipher; it appears to be "Burry Man". This family appears in the 1880 Census for the 35th Ward of Pittsburgh: Joseph (42, working at mill), Emma (34), Charles (17), George (15), Harry (13), Florence (4), Frank (3), McNary (6 mo, Nov). Until further information can be found, it's assumed that he didn't marry and/or left the area after 1860.11

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Rational for her birth date: 1) According to Guardianship-related documents, she was under the age of 14 on 28 May 1840 and then again on 17 Aug 1844; 2) According to a Land Partition Petition filed on 5 Dec 1855, she was a minor but it's not specified whether her age was under 14 or under 21; 3) Her age couldn't have been under 14 in 1855 (implying she was born after 1841) because her father died in 1839; 4) Therefore she was born after 5 Dec 1834; 5) census profiling imples an 1838/1840 birth date range; 6) her father died in 1839; 6) 1840 census (the only one found for her) implies a range 1836/40; 7) 1855 land partition document implies that she was younger than Mary Ann.
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: She cannot be found in the 1850 census. Ardinger says that she married a Stephen Woods; but there's no even remotely matching census record in 1850. In addition, the 1855 land partition document cites her as "Emily Eliza" (i.e., no married name) with Isaac Walker as guardian.
