  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Some sources (e.g., the Montours Presbyterian Church's Session Records) indicate that her middle initial was "P". But History of Allegheny Co gives "J" as the middle initial and this is consistent with other sources indicating her middle name was Johnson.8,9
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger says James and Hannah (Calohan) Ewing had seven children and three were living in 1889 (but without a source citation). This has been used to specify "after 1889" death dates for their children Martha Jane and Elizabeth Johnson.1

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: According to Riddle's records, Mary was born 1825, died in 1854, and married Joseph P. Stewart before 1841. Given the ages of her children, this birth date is too late. The death date is possibly a "typo". The marriage date is OK; she was married before her father made his will (May 1841).6

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: (1) For David K. Ewing h/o Frances Margaret Woods, Riddle's records cite an unnamed son/daughter and a son David K. Ewing Jr. Ardinger's records instead cite sons Samuel J. and James Jr and shows a son David K. – who was known as "David K. Ewing Jr" – for David K.'s brother James. Riddle does not cite any children for David K.'s brother James. (2) The History of Allegheny Co says that David K. Ewing David K. Ewing h/o Frances Margaret Woods had four sons and only William was living in 1890. It also generally supports the fact that David K Jr was a son of David K.'s brother James. (3) For the son John Woods Ewing: WER's records cite 12 Sep 1831 and 1852 as dates of birth and death. Ardinger cites 1832-33 and 19 Feb 1854 for the death date, citing the Presbyterian Advocate Excerpts as the source. (4) Riddle’s reading of the Montour Cemetery says that the inscription for John Woods Ewing’s grave reads “died 185? (1854) in his 2? year”. (5) Ardinger’s source for the Samuel J.’s 1 Sep 1838 birth date is a 1919 Scott Family History. Ardinger’s source for James’ 1840/41 birth date is the 1850 Census, “Student, living with brother William and his Mother”, and results in his being married at age ~18. (6) Kraynek's information for James’ grave at Forest Grove Cemetery is: Ewing, James E. Jr, July 24 1830 - Dec. 11, 1872. Her information for Samuel J.’s grave is: Ewing, Samuel J., Oct. ___ - Feb. 12 ___. (7) The Montour Session minutes cite baptisms for David Ewing on 12 Sep 1831, 18 Nov 1833 and 20 Jan 1837. (8) This information has been merged as follows: a) The baptism on 12 Sep 1831 is assumed to be for William b. 15 Jul 1830, b) John Woods’ birth date is assumed to be ~1833 and the 18 Nov 1833 baptism is assumed to be for him, c) James’ birth date is assumed to be 1835/36 and the 20 Jan 1837 baptism is assumed to be for him, and d) 1 Sep 1838 is retained as Samuel J.’s birth date. Addendum: Census profiling suggests that the 12 Sep 1831 baptism is for James and that James was born ~1831. The 12 Sep 1831 baptism has been switched and the 20 Jan 1837 has been dropped pending further research. One possibility to consider is that there's yet another child, born ~1837, who died in infancy (within a census decade).1,14,10,6,15,16,17
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Cemetery-related sources give the death date as "July 15, 1845". Ardinger quotes from the Presbyterian Advocate Excerpts: "Died on the 23rd at his residence ...". Ardinger's date is used as the date of death. The cemetery record's date is used as the date of interment.1,7,6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling implies a daughter who was born 1821/25 and died or left home prior to the 1850 census. [Her father's Will needs to be found to see if she is mentioned and has a married name.] This leads to using 1820/1824 as the marriage date range. This is consistent with the census profile for William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing indicating that David K. Ewing was not living at home at the time of the 1820 census. There is, however, no separate census record for David K. Ewing in 1820. Perhaps he was living with his in-laws. Addendum: Including this daughter creates a problem with Frances Margaret's age at the time of her marriage and the first of this daughter. Ardinger cites >1813 as Frances Margaret's birth date. Census profiling leads to ~1810 as her birth date. Based on ~1810, Frances Margaret would have been 15 years old, at the most, when this daughter was born. Therefore, the possible daughter is not listed as a child. It remains to determine who she might be and why she appears in the 1830 census record. It also remains to determine where David K. was in 1820. One possibility that would explain all of this is that the daughter comes from a first marriage prior to 1820. More data are needed however before this can assumed to be the case.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: An 1820 census record has not been found for David K. Ewing. He does not appear in the record for his father/mother. He would have been aged 25 in 1820. He may have married just before the census and might be included in the record for his in-laws.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1840 David K. and Frances Margaret (Woods) Ewing census record indicates a second male 40<>49 in the household. David K. died in 1845 and may have been "indisposed" to the point that someone was needed to help with farming.13
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling gives birth dates for some the children of David K. and Frances Margaret (Woods) Ewing that are quite different from those that come from other sources. They are all in roughly the same range, but they are generally a few years earlier and lead to a different birth order. The birth dates stemming from the census profiling are used, but more research is needed. In particular, the Montour Session Minutes should be re-checked and legal documents, for example, David K. Ewing's Will, should be located.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Eric Ewing cites a son, William David Ewing, having the same birth/death dates as David K. Ewing. This is probably the son2 who was born between 1790 and 1800 and died between 1810 and 1820. Possibly, he was a twin to David K. Ewing.4

One possibility to consider is that there's yet another child, born ~1837, who died in infancy (within a census decade).1,10,12,13,14,8,15

  • Comment: William Ewing's will, written Jun 1845 and probated Aug 1845 says: "Son William that part of my land joining lands on the south with my sons David and James by the conditional line and on the north by a conditional line ... my house with furniture; cattle, farming utensils and grain in the ground." William's cousin William Harvey Ewing was willed land on the north side of the conditional line.12
  • CensusNoChildren*: In 1850, William Ewing was living alone in Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. His parents had both died, and he inherited the family land and home. He had not yet married; Dwelling 46, Family 46; Real Estate Value 3000; William Ewing, 39, Farmer.1,13
  • CensusOccValueSingle: William was a Farmer. He owned $3,000 of real estate.13
  • LegalDocument: William Ewing is mentioned in a Petition for Land Partition (regarding his father's land) filed by James Harvey Ewing on 5 December 1855 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. The petition mentions: "James H. Ewing, Eldest son"; sons John and Joseph and daughters Mary Ann Ewing and Emily Eliza Ewing (minors represented by their guardian Isaac Walker Jr) are co-Petitioners; ”William Ewing intermarried with Sarah Ewing daughter of … James Ewing deceased, said Sarah having died intestate and without issue” is a co-Petitioner; “Rebecca Johnston late the widow of … James Ewing deceased now intermarried with Andrew Johnston” is a co-Petitioner; “James Ewing died intestate on or about the Sixth day of November A.D. 1839, leaving issue Seven children”, “Rebecca widow of the said intestate surviving him”, “Jane Ewing … one of the daughters of said intestate when of full age sold her interest in the Real Estate … to Isaac Walker Jr (guardian of her siblings) and William E. Boyd formerly Guardian”; “Sarah Ewing since the death of her Father, intermarried with William Ewing … and died on or about the Twenty Seventh day of April A.D. 1855, intestate and without issue”; land was “all that certain tract of land situate partly in Robinson and partly in South Fayette Townships, Allegheny County State of Pennsylvania bounded by the lands of John Ewings heirs, William McConnell, Isaac Walker Jr, Ewing Walker Robert Smith and William Bell, containing Three hundred and forty Eight Acres more or less, and allowances for Roads” [Land is subsequently split into three parts and taken by James H., John and Joseph].14
  • Census*: Jane and William Ewing were living in Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, in 1860. Living at home with them was/were their child(ren) Lizonia, Robert and James. A 36 year old Laborer, Robert Symms, was living with the family; Dwelling 134, Family 132; Real Property 8720, Personal Property 1126; William Ewing, 36, farmer; Jane A - 36, Robert B (attending school) - 4, Lizona D (attending school) - 6, William J - 2; Robert Symms (laborer) - 36.15
  • CensusOccValue*: William was a Farmer; Jane was a Housekeeper. They owned $8,720 of real estate. They had personal property valued at $1,126.15
  • CensusWidower*: William was a Widower living in (Temperanceville Post Office) Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania in 1870. His child(ren) Lizonia D., Robert B. and James William was/were living with him; Dwelling 20, Family 20; Real Estate Value 15000, Personal Estate Value 100; Wm Ewing, Farmer, 60; Lazona (House Keeper) - 15, Robt B - 13, W J - 11.16
  • CensusOccValueSingle*: William was a Farmer. He owned $15,000 of real estate. He had personal property valued at $100.16
  • Will*: William Ewing prepared a Will on 27 May 1875 at Robinson Township, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (Abstract: Sound mind, memory and understanding. Estate real, personal and mixed, to children Lizoni D. Ewing, Robert B. Ewing and William James Ewing. Executors: W. Ebenezer Riddle of Robinson Township and William H. Ewing of Pittsburgh. Witnesses: R. W. Gibson and D. K. Ewing.).12
  • Will-Filed*: His Will was filed on 30 October 1875 at Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, (WB Vol. 18, pg. 620, No. 331).12
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ardinger cites 1878 as the date of death; so does Kraynek. However, his Will was filed in 1875.1,2,12
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: For Lot A-149, McCandless cites an infant daughter, gives 3 Aug 1860 as the date of death, and says “date plain but remainder illegible”; Riddle's Montours Cemetery Compilation repeats this data. Riddle's records from his visit to the cemetery circa 1977 cite both an infant son (d. 21 Aug 1861) and an infant daughter (d. 3 Aug 1860) and says “infants of W & JN Ewing, Sr”. Ardinger cites “infants” but gives just one date of death: 21 Aug 1861. It’s assumed that there were two children who both died in infancy. Riddle's death dates are used. Birth dates come from an analysis of census records.17,18,19,1,4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Kraynek's notes about the Forest Grove grave - "Row 1, Item 40; Kraynek's Notes: Ewing, William, Sr., His Wife Jane Hoey, Their Son, Robert B. Ewing, 1810-1878" - imply that all three people are interred within the grave. However, since it is apparently a single grave, this is not at all clear. It might just be a grave for William Ewing. Supporting this is the fact that 1810-1878 refers to the birth/death dates for William Ewing.2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census records consistently show the Elizabeth and William Riddle family living next to Hewey/Hughy/Huey families. In addition the Huey plot is next to the Riddle plot. Finally, the patriarch of the Huey family named William Ewing as an Executor of his Will. This all indicates "ties" between these families. One implication is that the Jane A. Hoey Noble who married William Ewing (1810-1875) - s/o Elizabeth and William Riddle - may have "come from" this family in some way.4,6

Family 1: Jane A. Hoey Noble d. bt 1856 - 1858

  • Birth*: He was born circa 1789.4,5,6
  • He was the son of William Ewing and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick.
  • Marriage*: John Ewing married (?) Hooper, daughter of Philip Hooper and Mary Hill, between 1800 and 1810.4,5
  • Death*: John Ewing died on 25 November 1829.4,1,6

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites a son, John, of William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing who died before 1845. Ardinger cites an unnamed Ewing, b. 1789, d. 1829. The data concerning these two people have been merged.4,8
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: In the Montour Cemetery, there are two distinct graves for a John Ewing b. 1789 and d. 25 Nov 1829. Riddle's personal check of the cemetery verified that there are, in fact, two graves (next to each other) marked with gravestones having identical inscriptions. McCandless’ Lot Sheet notes that one of the stones is marble, matching the stone for Elizabeth (Ewing) Woods to the north, and that the other stone is sandstone, matching the stone for Mary (McKown) Ewing to the south. The gravesite to the south is assumed to be for John Ewing son of William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing and grandson of James and Mary (McKown) Ewing. There’s the possibility that the gravesite to the north is for someone related to Elizabeth (Ewing) Woods and who just happens to have the same genealogical data. This, however, is not very plausible. It’s assumed therefore that both stones refer to John Ewing son of William and Elizabeth (Kirkpatrick) Ewing.1,4,2,3
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The Montour Session Minutes cite 20 Nov 1829 as his date of death. It's possible that he died on the 20th and was interred on the 25th.9
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Sources generally cite >1818 as marriage date for John and (Hooper) Ewing. According to census profiles, however, he is living at home in 1880 but not in the 1810 census. It is assumed that he married 1800/10. Since we was 21 years old in 1810, it's probable that the marriage date is within a couple of years at the end of this date range, i.e., 1809/10.5
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling gives 1775/1784 as his birth date range. However, his tombstone in the Montour Cemetery and the information in the Montour Session Minutes are consistent in specifying an 1789 birth date.5,1,9

One possibility to consider is that there's yet another child, born ~1837, who died in infancy (within a census decade).1,9,10,11,12,13,14
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: In the 1880 census entry for the William and Elizabeth Marks (Young) Ewing household, Ohio is given as the birthplace for each individual and their mother and Pennsylvania is given as the birthplace for each individual's father. This is certainly incorrect for most, perhaps all, of the individuals.8
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1840 David K. and Frances Margaret (Woods) Ewing census record indicates a second male 40<>49 in the household. David K. died in 1845 and may have been "indisposed" to the point that someone was needed to help with farming.6
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Frances Margaret (Woods) Ewing appears living in the household of her son, William Ewing, in 1850 and 1880. She doesn't, however, appear in her son's census record in 1860 or 1870. Nor can she be found in any other record for these years. There are, however, two possibilities in 1860: 1) there's a dwelling that in the "neighborhood" of relatives in Robinson Township that is classified as "unoccupied", and 2) also in Robinson township, there's a record for a 53-year old Margaret as head of household accompanied solely by a 13-year old farm laborer, James Fitzgerald.2

  • CensusOccValueSingle*: John was a Farmer.10
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle's records cite 12 Sep 1831 and 1852 as his birth/death dates of birth and death. Ardinger cites 1832/33 and 19 Feb 1854 for these dates, referencing Heckethorn’s Genealogical Excerpts from the Presbyterian Advocate, Oct 4, 1838 - Oct 24, 1855 as one of his sources. These dates are merged to give 12 Sep 1831 as the birth date and 19 Feb 1854 as the date of death. Addendum (13 Oct 2005): Census profiling implies a ~1833 date of birth. This is close(r) to his baptism date, so it is used as the birth date.3,2,6,11
One possibility to consider is that there's yet another child, born ~1837, who died in infancy (within a census decade).3,2,12,5,13,6,11
Ewing's Will, should be located.7

  • ResearchNote: Research Note: (1) The 1880 census record for Mary A. Ewing indicates that she was a Widow and that Francis was her stepdaughter. (2) The 1860 census record for Samuel J. (4) Kraynek's records for the Forest Grove Cemetery indicate that Samuel J. Ewing's wife, Mary A., died in 1865 and that they had a daughter Emma (no birth/death data are given). (5) Emma does not show up in any census records. (6) All of this leads to assuming that: a) Samuel J. and Mary A. () Ewing married in 1860 and had two daughters, Emma and Francis, b) Emma died before 1870, c) After his first wife died, Samuel J. Ewing married Mary A. Guy and their (natural) children were William, James and Henry.3,2

  • CensusOccValue*: William was a 50-year old Miller; Elizabeth was a 49-year old Housekeeper.8
One possibility to consider is that there's yet another child, born ~1837, who died in infancy (within a census decade).2,14,7,15,1,16,17
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle cites children as: David K., Sarah W., Hannah, T. M., Lizzie and Edwin E. Ardinger says he had seven children living in 1889 and cites nine children but doesn't cite death dates sufficient to the support the claim that only seven were living in 1889. According to the current (17 Jun 2005) data, Harry may have died before 1889 but all the other eight children were living in 1889.2,14
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: In the 1880 census entry for the William and Elizabeth Marks (Young) Ewing household, Ohio is given as the birthplace for each individual and their mother and Pennsylvania is given as the birthplace for each individual's father. This is certainly incorrect for most, perhaps all, of the individuals.8
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Ida Ewing is cited by Ardinger as a daughter of William and Elizabeth Marks (Young) Ewing. However, she does not appear in census records for this family. She does, however, appear in Kraynek's record of the Forest Grove Cemetery, buried in the family plot for David K. Ewing; it would appear that she is a granddaughter but there's not enough information to decide for which of David K.' sons. Kraynek cites 1861 and 1891 as her birth/death dates. She is recorded as a daughter of William and Elizabeth Marks (Young) Ewing but her parentage needs to be sorted out.2,1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Census profiling gives birth dates for some the children of David K. and Frances Margaret (Woods) Ewing that are quite different from those that come from other sources. They are all in roughly the same range, but they are generally a few years earlier and lead to a different birth order. The birth dates stemming from the census profiling are used, but more research is needed. In particular, the Montour Session Minutes should be re-checked and legal documents, for example, David K. Ewing's Will, should be located.4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Riddle's records give 20 Jan 1837 as William Ewing's date of birth. The History of Allegheny Co gives 15 Jul 1830, and Ardinger also cites this date. Census profiling, however, leads to 1828 as the date of birth.2,14,7,4
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Kraynek's record of the Forest Grove Cemetery cites "Ewing, Harry, son of W.& E. M.". He is listed in the lot for William and Elizabeth Marks (Young) Ewing. It's assumed that he's a son who died in infancy. But there's no information that helps understand when he was born and died; in particular, he does not appear in any census records.1
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: Eric Ewing cites 'David' as his middle name.5

In addition, she appears in the census record for her parents in 1860 and 1870 but not in 1880. It's assumed that she married 1870/80. Further ... the census record for her and her husband, Matthew Phillips, cites the oldest child, Edith, as being three years old. This implies she married before 1877.1,2
  • ResearchNote: Research Note: The 1880 Census shows Matthew and Sarah W.
