  • Property*: William A. Ewing owned property (Lots 7, 8 and 9 in Block 17) on 4 February 1915 at Two Buttes, Baca Co, Colorado. He purchased these lots from Benjamin W. Metcalf for $1500. The history of these lots is confusing, perhaps because we only have partial records. It looks like he may have sold and repurchased these several times. On 1 Aug 1917, La Bounty executed an Indenture in favor of the Public Trustee of Baca County to secure notes payable to Wm Ewing totalling $900 -- I (DNE) presume Wm Ewing had sold to La Bounty on a Deed of Trust; there is a marginal note on that Indenture of a Release. Then in 19 Aug 1918, La Bounty executed a deed to Wm Ewing, selling him the property for $900. We also have a deed dated 23 July 1921 of a Bullard selling these same lots to Ewing again for $1500. None of these lots are listed in Fred Ewing's application for Letters of Administration on William's Estate, but on the Appraisement Bill in the probate documents, 24 2/3 feet of Lot 8 Block 19 is listed under the heading "Ray Ewing" and is valued at $360.1

This may or may not be true, but we did find a picture of Two Buttes, CO, with a caption showing "Ewing Pool Hall." The 1930 US Census has him living in Two Buttes and shows his occupation as "manager-billiard parlor."

We think he did not live or work in Cañon. (16 Aug 2004, de) at Cañon City, Fremont Co, Colorado.1
  • Census: Ella and William A. Ewing lived in Two Buttes (Precinct 8), Baca Co, Colorado, on 2 April 1930. Raymond Ewing, age 41, is living with them. William's occupation is shown as "Manager, billiard parlor." They own their home, which is valued at $2000. They also own a radio.9
  • Property: William A. Ewing owned property (Lot 5 in Block 19) in 1939 at Two Buttes, Baca Co, Colorado. Listed in Fred Ewing's Petition for Letters of Administration in the estate of William A. Ewing in Baca County. There were also two other parcels. We also have a deed showing that William's son, Ray Ewing who died in 1933, had been the original purchaser of this lot from the Two Buttes Townsite Company in 1917. Presumably, William inherited from Ray when he died. In 1939 when William died, this parcel appraised for $80; Ray had paid $300 for it in 1917. So much for real estate always being a good investment.1

She told me that her mother had died when she was about one year old and that her father couldn't care for her, so gave her to Stella to raise. Stella was married four times, divorced twice and widowed twice, and never had children of her own. When Stella married Fred, she had already had Joan for over a year. Joan was five years old when Fred died, so she remembers him only vaguely.
