In 1940 she was on N. 4th street; there were no telephone books available from 1941-1945--perhaps they weren't published during the war. There was also no 1947 or Feb 1948 book in the library.
  • Moved: Circa 1949, Nellie Elizabeth Ryan moved to from Canyon City to Boulder, Colorado; Alice was 14 years old.
  • Lived: Nellie Elizabeth Ryan was living on 18 May 1951.

Nellie fell and broke her arm (Alice says one arm; Stan says both arms) and also became very depressed. Stan went to LA and persuaded her to come back to Farmington with him and go to work in his State Farm Insurance Agency, where she worked until she was 87 years old.
  • Illness*: She was ill with Nellie fell down a flight of stairs and hit her head on a door jamb, fracturing her skull and bleeding into the brain. She had been completely intact cognitively before that and was still working in Stan Ewing's State Farm Office and living independently in her little trailer house in Farmington, NM. She was very seriously injured, and though she recovered to the extent she could walk and talk, she never was right again, and never was able to live independently again. She had a degree of aphasia, but her most striking problem was apraxia. She couldn't remember how to do ANYTHING. Several months after the injury, her grandson David arranged for one of his colleagues in geropsychiatry to admit her and work her up. A CAT scan revealed that she had no cerebral atrophy at all, but there was serious injury to the brain--centered in the L temporal lobe. A finding of no atrophy in an 87 year old brain is truly remarkable. circa 1986 at Alice's Home, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Co, New Mexico.
