Go to Chapter 13 James Ewing father of John

       1. John Love Ewing {34} was born 31 Mar 1816 in Wilson County, Tennessee. He was the son of James Ewing {31} and Nancy Smith {32}. John died 18 Feb 1845. He married Mary Jane McAdoo {269} 19 Dec 1839 in Cannon County, Tennessee. She was born 26 Dec 1818. She was the daughter of James McAdoo and Judith Smith.

Known child of John is:

     2.        i.   Nancy Malinda Ewing {4714}, born about 1843 in Missouri. She married Bain Thompson {4713} on 14 Feb 1866 in Cannon County, Tennessee.

Several sources of information for the twelve children of James and Nancy Smith Ewing are available. At least three separate records kept by children or grandchildren of James Ewing are still in the hands of descendants. From the Notebook of Maud Rich Edwards Footnote “This book was kept by my dear old grandma (Lucinda Clemmons Ewing) until her death, Aug. 5 1895". (p.249-257) (copied as written:) “John Love buried at home in the garden on the North side of the house - tha laid in the Ewing grave yard quater of a mile from Prosperity Baptist Church on Smith fork creek in Wilson County, Tennessee. (p. 254) John L. married Mary J. McAdoo. (p. 255)” Footnote

John Love and Mary Jane were first cousins both being grandchildren of Shadrack Smith and Nancy Bailey. Nancy Smith Ewing, John Love’s mother is a sister to Judith Smith McAdoo the mother of Mary Jane.

In Nancy Moulton’s book, page 261, we find a Bible record which states: “James McAdow was born 25 Dec 1788, Judith Smith was born 18 Sep 1794, Newbern McAdow was born 4 May 1813, Analiza McAdow was born 14 Feb 1815, Mary Jane McAdow was born 26 Dec 1818, James McAdow died 19 Feb 1840, Judith McAdow died 17 Apr 1840, Newbern McAdow died 5 July 1835.” The old Bible in 1936 was

owned by Earl McAdoo of Auburntown, Tennessee. Note the difference in the spelling of McAdow/McAdoo.

On 20 January 1851, Shadrack Smith signed his will. In his will he gives a portion of his estate, two Negroes, to the children of his daughter, Nancy Smith Ewing who had preceded her father in death. He names the ten living children of the twelve children born to Nancy. Since John Love Ewing had died, Shadrack names John’s daughter, Nancy Malinda, to receive his portion. That would indicate that John Love Ewing had only one child living in 1851.

The above note found in the Smith book would indicate that John Love Ewing was living in Tennessee when he died. Since the James Ewing family lived in the southeast corner of Wilson County, it is not known if he, John Love Ewing, lived in Wilson or Cannon County. It is quite possible that his wife, Mary Jane, had preceded him in death. Mary Jane may have died in Missouri. Having a child under two years of age may have been the reason that John Love Ewing came back to the area in Tennessee where his father lived. In the 1850 Census for Cannon County, Tennessee, we found Nancy Milinda Ewing listed in the home of Martha McAdoo. Nancy’s age is given as 7 years and it is noted that she was born in Missouri. If she was born in Missouri, that would indicate that John Love and Mary Jane had moved to Missouri sometime after they were married. It is quite possible that Mary Jane may have died in childbirth or a short time after giving birth to Nancy. It appears that John Love Ewing came back to Tennessee before he died in 1845 and that could have been after his wife had died. Nancy was only about two years when her father died. No additional information is known about Martha McAdoo.

On the 1860 Census for Cannon County, Tennessee, it listed Nancy Ewing, age 17, and Martha McAdoo, age 59, living in the home of Ezek Alexander. A film record of the Marriage Records 1850-1866 for Cannon County, Tennessee, license No. 124, John B. Thompson to Nancy M. Ewing, Feb 13, 1866, Feb 14th 1866 by J. F. Patton, M.G. Josephus Finley, Clerk. The two dates probably indicate the license was issued one day and the marriage took place the next day. In the settlement of the estate of James Ewing a Milinada M. who married Bain Thompson is identified. It is believed that John B. is John Bain Thompson who married Nancy Ewing.

No additional information is known for this family. Since, apparently, both parents had died when Nancy was very young and living in Cannon County, she was separated from the Smith and Ewing families with contact being lost after a couple of generations.
