1. Lucinda Clemmons Ewing {36} was born 8 Dec 1819 in Wilson Co., TN. She was the daughter of James Ewing {31} and Nancy Smith {32}. Lucinda died 5 Aug 1895. She married Joseph Hopkins “Hop” Kennedy {323} 28 Feb 1839 in Wilson Co., Tenn. He was born 23 Jun 1816 in Wilson Co., TN. He was the son of William Barnett Kennedy {329} and Drusilla Hobson {330}. Joseph died 8 Feb 1898.

After making contact with different people that have information on this family, the middle name for Joseph H. Kennedy is in question. For my records, I got the parents name for him from the Biographical Appendix, the volume that includes Wilson Co., page 1103, in the History of Tennessee Illustrated by The Goodspeed Publishing Company and reprinted in 1988 by Southern Historical Press, Inc. In that article his mother’s name is given as Drusilla Hobson. In the personal records of James William Ewing, Jr., a nephew of Lucinda and Joseph H. Kennedy, the middle name for Joseph is given as Hopkins. In a number of places, in those records, he is referred to as “Hop”. Since James W. Ewing knew Hop personally and he may have been keeping family records by the time that Hop died, I am inclined to believe that the Biographical may be in error. As far as this history goes, it does not really make a difference and it is being left to later researchers to determine which middle name is correct, but I have used Joseph Hopkins. Also, Hancock in his Diary referred to him as Hop as quoted in an earlier chapter.
In the Goodspeed article, we find: “At the age of 18, he began working for Tally & Bro., merchants, of Statesville, and a year later went into the Seminole war, and his company acted as advance guard for the regular army. After again serving some time as salesman he purchased 200 acres of land where he now lives, and which he has increased to 300 acres. He suffered large losses from the effects of the civil war, but in the main, fortune has dealt kindly with him. He belongs to the Democratic party and the Masonic fraternity. His wife is a member of the Baptist Church.”
His will dated 29 Jan 1898, is recorded in Wilson County, Tennessee Will Book for 1896-02, p. 183. He does not name his children. The administration of his will is found on page 365 of the ADMINISTRATION & EXECUTORS BOOK C.

Joseph E. Kennedy, the young man who was found in an unconscious condition Wednesday morning lying beside the railroad track near Guthrie, Kentucky, died Friday morning without regaining consciousness and the cause of his death may forever be a mystery. Less than twenty-four hours after he left Nashville for Port Royal, TN, where he was to have been married to Miss Carrie Moore, a resident of that place, Joe E. Kennedy, formerly of Prosperity, Wilson Co., aged 28 years, a prominent real estate man, member of the firm of Kennedy Bros. & Graves, was brought back to Nashville in an unconscious condition. Mr. Kennedy was found lying beside the tracks of the Louisville & Nashville railroad near Guthrie, Kentucky, by the train crew early Wednesday morning. He was unconscious and was suffering from internal injuries, a fracture of the base of the skull, and contusions on the head and face. After receiving medical attention at Guthrie he was hurried to Nashville, arriving here Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock. He was taken to Dr. R. E. Fort's private infirmary. B. R. Kennedy, brother of the unfortunate man, when seen Wednesday night at Fort's infirmary, where he was in attendance at the bedside, could throw no light on his brother's movements, further than to say that he probably left Nashville late Tuesday or early Wednesday for (end of newspaper article sent by John W. Kennedy in January 1998).
