            1. Alexander Bailey Ewing {37} was born 24 Nov 1821 in Wilson Co., TN. He was the son of James Ewing {31} and Nancy Smith {32}. Alexander died 31 Dec 1886 in Hunt Co., Texas, and was buried in the Dulaney Cemetery in Dulaney, Hunt Co., Texas. He married Emily J Wilson {373} 17 Nov 1845 in Wilson Co., Tenn. She was born 5 Oct 1826 in TN. She was the daughter of Robert J. Wilson and Elizabeth Rich. Emily died 19 Oct 1901 in Hunt Co., Texas, and was buried in the Dulaney Cemetery in Dulaney, Hunt Co., Texas.

Known children of Alexander are:

     + 2.          i.          William Thomas Ewing {378}, born 4 Dec 1848, died 29 Mar 1900.

     + 3.         ii.          Helen Amanda Ewing {379}, born 17 Nov 1850, died 1 Feb 1884.

     + 4.        iii.          James Love Ewing {380}, born 4 Sep 1852, died 24 Oct 1911.

     + 5.        iv.          Angelina E Ewing {381}, born 27 Jan 1856, died 16 Sep 1877.

     + 6.         v.          Antipeas Alexander Ewing {382}, born 16 Jan 1860, died 11 Oct 1911.

By looking beyond the Ewing family and their spouses, we can learn more about the web of some of the families. Elizabeth Rich, the mother of Emily J. Wilson, is the daughter of Charles Rich and Drucilla Smith. Drucilla is a daughter of Alexander Smith and Diana Phelps. Based on the Smith lineage, Alexander Bailey Ewing and Emily J. Wilson are second cousins. Nancy Smith the mother of Alexander Bailey is a niece of Drucilla.

Based on the birth place, Tennessee, of the first two children of Alexander and Emily, and Texas being the birth place of the third child, James L. born in September 1852, we know that they were in Texas by 1852. In 1851, Robert J. Wilson and his family moved to Texas and apparently lived in Fannin Co. for a period of time. He is the father of Emily and it is believe that Alexander Ewing and family moved to Texas at the same time.

The 1860 Census for Texas lists Alexander Ewing and his family in Fannin Co. and the 1870 Census for Texas list the family living in Hunt Co., Texas with the Post Office being White Rock which is about five miles or so east of Celeste. Also, by 1870, some of the brothers of Alexander and one sister had moved to Texas.

In a quick look at the index of deeds in the Court House in Greenville, Texas, I found where S. N. Ewing had purchase land on Indian Creek on July 8, 1859, A. B. Ewing had purchased land on Indian Creek on July 31, 1867, and B. D. Ewing had purchased land on Indian Creek on 31 July 1867, R. B. Ewing had purchased land on Indian Creek on January 16, 1871 which is about five miles or so west of Celeste. However, on the 1870 Census, the Post Office is shown as White Rock which is about ten miles east of the area of Dulaney where the Ewings purchased land on Indian Creek. Since the census record indicates White Rock as the Post Office that must have been the closest post office in the area at that time. Celeste was developed as a town after the railroad came to the county in 1880.

Based on a military record received from a request made to the GSA, National Archives and Records Service in 1969, A. B. Ewing was in the 1st Battalion Infantry, Texas State Troops in 1864. He enrolled on January 31, 1864 at the age of 42 years, a resident of Fannin Co. and appeared on the Muster Roll dated Camp Roberts near Bonham, Texas, February 2, 1864.

Charles Rich had died intestate in Wilson Co., Tennessee. Since he died intestate, we have information in the court record that might not have been included in the settlement of his estate if he had written a will. Emily Wilson the wife of Alexander Bailey Ewing is a granddaughter of Charles Rich. From the Chancery Court Records of Wilson Co., Tennessee, 1842-1892, we can learn more about the move to Texas. The original bill was filed March 21, 1857. From the records, we find:

“The Bill of Complaint of Elizabeth Rich, George William F. Rich, John Sneed and his wife Anna, Mathew Wilson and his wife Mary, Jeff M. Sneed and his wife Lucy, John M. Hayes and James T. Hayes, citizens of Wilson Co., Tennessee.

Against

Robert Wilson, Alex Ewing & his wife Emily, Jesse Powell and his wife Louisa, Paralee Wilson, Hardena Wilson, Susan Wilson, Charles T. Wilson, and John Wilson, citizens of the State of Texas; Charles W. Rich, citizen of McNairy County, and Wm Rich, citizen of Fayette County, Tennessee. Thomas W. Rich, citizen of Wilson County, Frances Harper and Wm Harper and his wife, Lucy Ann, citizens of the State of Arkansas, and Sterling Rich citizen of the State of Alabama, and Joel Rich citizen of Sumner County, Tennessee.

“. . . Charles Rich died, leaving the testamentary paper herein after referred to, in this County in the month of July 1856, leaving your oratrix Elizabeth his widow and six children and two sets of grandchildren his only distributees and heirs at law, all of whom are made parties to this will as complainants or defendants. In the September term last of the Wilson Court your Orator Geo. A. Rich was qualified as Admin on the estate of the said intestate and he is well satisfied from his knowledge of the outstanding liabilities of said intestates estate that the means are amply sufficient for the payment of debts and expense of the administration.

“. . . Said intestate was the owner at his death of nine slaves, to witt, Nelson aged about 60 years, Lette, aged about 55 years, Mary aged about 52 years, Brooker aged about 47 years, Betsy aged about 24 years, George aged about 16 years, Henry aged 14 years, William aged about 12 years, and Sam aged about 5 years, and said intestate was also at his death the owner of a large and valuable tract of land containing about 830 acres, situate in this county in civil district above and below the juncture of Smith & Saunder’s Fork, being on the land on which said intestate resided at his death and for many years before his death, the boundaries of which will more full appear from said intestate’s title papers which will be filed on the hearing if it would become necessary to do so for any purpose.”

The above information places Alexander Bailey Ewing and wife Emily and the Wilson family in Texas. Based on Alexander living in Fannin Co. in 1860 when the census was taken and in 1864 when he joined the military services, I have concluded that he must have lived in Fannin Co. from the time he came to Texas until he purchased land in 1867 in Hunt Co., Texas near his brothers.

        20.         v.          Belmont L Shields {699}, born 1889. He married Hattie Rampy {702}.

In October 1997, Kenneth Smith sent an article that appeared in the Dallas, Texas paper on October 2, 1997. Joe Shields, the subject of the article, daughter Angela is the next door neighbor to Kenneth Smith. Kenneth indicates it is a “small world”. Joe Shields is a related to Gus Shields who is one of the “Texas Giants”.

To add a little more interest to the above I went to the same public school system in Celeste, Texas that Joe attended. Joe’s brother was one of my teachers and he was married to a Ewing. Joe’s wife has a brother that is married to a Ewing descendant and I doubt that Joe knows that.

The following article is given the way it was printed in Nancy Moulton’s book.

“Tall tales on giants measure up - Bob St. John”

“You often find Joe Shields, 70 and officially retired, hanging around his son Mike’s Exxon station just off the downtown square in Rockwall. He’ll sit there in jeans, cowboy boots and gimme cap, smoking cigarettes and talking, talking and smoking cigarettes.

“He’ll shoot the breeze with some of his cronies who stop by and expound on anything that comes to mind, such as the rapidly growing town around him. “When I moved here in 1952, everybody in town knew it,” he said. “If I leave now, nobody would know it.”

Page 342

Return to beginning

“But sooner than later gets around to talking about his granddaddy Jack Shield’s being one of the “Texas Giants,” the four brothers who toured the United States and parts of Canada with the circus in the 1880s. Now I usually go along with Joe until he says the brothers were all well over 7 feet tall. I figure he’s getting a little carried away. Recently, I found out he wasn’t.

“Indeed, Jack was said in documents in those days to be 7 feet 11 3/4 inches tall. Furthermore, Jack’s brothers were Shade, 7-foot-8, Guss 7-foot-10, and Frank, also 7 feet 11 3/4 inches.

“Off to the circus - If you visit Kingston just north of Greenville, you’re likely to hear about the Shields boys, who were raised on a farm near there. Joe also grew up in Kingston and heard stories about the Giants from his father, Byron who was Jack’s son. Joe lent me a 1972 self-published family book by the late Weldon Shields. It contains letters, records, pictures and old documents about the family, including the Texas Giants.

“Apparently about 1880, a man scouting talent for P. T. Barnum heard about the Goliath-sized young men and asked if they would be interested in joining the circus and seeing the country. They weren’t doing so well on the farm so they decided to give it a try. They traveled with the circus by train and indeed saw not only the country but also parts of Canada.

“In 1881 Barnum combined his circus with James Bailey’s and in 1888 they renamed it Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth. The circus paid for their train fare, meals and hotel rooms, and a letter from Guss to his uncle said the brothers earned $100 a week as a group.

“In another letter in the book, Frank wrote to his wife, Achasah, that the beds and food were good and that their jobs and pay “beat farming” but were “no good payment for me as you are on my mind all the time.”

“‘From what I can gather, all they had to do was stand around looking tall and getting their pictures made’, said Joe. ‘They didn’t have any extra work or duties. That doesn’t sound like a bad deal. I’d like to have a job just standing around and getting my picture taken.’

“Generational downsizing - When it was mentioned that he wasn’t tall enough, just 6-1 ½, he puffed on his cigarette and said he guessed that over generations the men in the family had just married short women. ‘They brought us down to size,’ he added, looking over at Mike, who is 5-9 and indicating that in some future generation men in the family might be back in the circus as Texas Shorties.’

“‘Oh, I don’t know if they were really all that tall,’ continued Joe, puffing away. ‘At the circus they wore boots and tall hats and whatever made them appear taller than they were. Why, I doubt any of them were much over 7 foot.’

“An old picture in the book, apparently a publicity shot from the circus, shows Jack standing next to ‘an unidentified average-size man.’ The guy comes to just above Jack’s waist.

“Shade was the last to leave the circus, in the 1890s. He moved to Missouri and became a justice of the peace and mayor who was too big for anybody to fool with. Frank, Guss and Jack returned to Hunt Co., where it was said they became upstanding citizens active in the church and community. Jack did open a saloon in Greenville and apparently prospered. He died at the age of 37 in 1896.

“Joe talked about how another of the brothers also had a saloon but said they were all good guys as far as he knew. He was silent for a short while, then said that he was getting old and forgetful. “I go into this room to think about the here-after. A few seconds later I wonder what I’m here after.’”

Guss Shields wrote the following letter Footnote to Shadrack Anderson, his uncle in Mineola, Texas. Shadrack Anderson was Penelope Shields’ brother.

St. Louis, Missouri

June 2nd, 1883

Dear Uncles and Cousins,

Tis with pleasure that I drop a few words. We are all well. Leave here tonight for Chicago, Ill. Stay there 10 days. Have been here one week, but after we leave Chicago will have 21 or 22 one-day stands as we call it, that is, show one day in a place. When we stop more than one day in a place, we are “laidout” as it called in this business. Now I expect you wonder what laidout means. I wondered what it meant when I first heard it. They send a man ahead to “lay out the people.” Now it only means that he goes on to make arrangements at hotels for a place for the folks with the show to board. Now as to style, there is not so much here as in the cities east, but even here it beats Texas some. We have a nice large room with carpets on the floor; in fact, the whole floor is carpeted, even the stairs. We have a good bed spring mattress. The bedstead is supposed to cost $12 or $15; marble-top wash stand, marble-top bureau and from appearance marble must be very cheap, for the fire board and from the fire board to the floor is all marble and even the hearth is marble. I am writing on a marble-top center table and my idea is it is more extravagance than anything else. We are making money, but it is like almost any other business; it takes money to start and we use a good deal. Although we are boarded and R. R. fare is paid,

Page 344

Return to beginning

our other little expenses have to be paid. We get $100.00 per week and make some on pictures and a little book which I wrote before we left home last spring. The most I have made any one day is $8.72, but that was the best day we have had for selling books and pictures. My part of the salary is $.12 per day, so I have made about $6.00 clear per day and we have an easy time, no responsibility nor no work. Go on exhibition generally at 12 o’clock and stay till 5:30, off an hour; then on again till eleven; though sometimes not so late. I think this is the largest show I ever saw. The daily expenses amount to $4,800.00. They have between 350 and 400 people. Direct your letter to me in Chicago, Ill. (In care of Barnum Show). For want of space and something interesting, I will close. Please answer.

                                                                                                Yours truly,

                                                                                                A. O. Shields

As indicated in the newspaper article Shade Shields was the last of the brothers to leave the circus in the 1890s. That appears to make Shade share the stage with the world’s tallest woman, Ella Ewing.

“Ella Ewing was born in 1872 in Lewis Co., Missouri and grew up near Gorin and local people remembered her as a warm, friendly person whose personality overshadowed her size. Her parents tried to shield her from “gawkers” but the task became harder all the time and Ella continued to grow taller and taller.

“Her parents, who had tried to shield her and had for several years firmly refused the offers of shows, carnivals and circuses, finally agreed to let her appear for $250 a week plus expenses for both parents to accompany her.

“Ella became a featured attraction in 1890 with Barnum and Bailey circus at age 18 and later with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and in her own tent from time to time at fairs and expositions. Her parents or a friend and traveling companion always accompanied her.

“A comfortable home was built on a 120 acre farm she purchased near Gorin with 15-foot ceilings, 10-foot doors and 7-foot windows, high enough so that she need not stoop. It is said that she would have been a few inches taller had she not carried herself in a somewhat stooped position, partly because of ordinary-size doors and entrances. Ella was 8 feet 4 ½ inches before her death at the age of nearly 41.

“It took 25 yards of cloth to make her a dress and she outgrew it soon after being made. People who approached from the rear as she sat in a chair were not aware of her height until she stood up and then they were speechless. Her home was built to her specifications as was her furniture. Her bed was 9 ½ feet long and sheets 10 ½ feet long, her dresser, 6 feet high, was without bottom drawers so that she did not have to stoop to get its contents, a hammock was 15 feet long and her table was 4 ½ feet tall.”

The above information about Ella Ewing was taken from an article that appeared in The LaBelle Star newspaper on Wednesday, January 10, 1979 and reprinted in the November 1994 issue of the Journal of Clan Ewing. The Ewing lineage of Ella is not known.
