ABRAM MC NEEL EWING


Ewing Family Lineage:      William-James


          Abram was the only one of William EWING's children with a middle name. The spelling "Abram Mc Neel" was taken from William's Bible. Abram was born 13 October 1804 in Pocahontas County, Virginia - now Bath County, Virginia. Abram was only six years old when the family moved to Gallia County, Ohio.

          Abram married Elizabeth A. (Betty) BOWMAN on 31 October 1828. They were married by Agrippa WILLS. The daughter of George and Evay (Eve) C. BOWMAN, Betty was born in 1812 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

          George and Eve Bowman were both born in Virginia and moved to Gallia County, Ohio in 1816. They settled in Raccoon Township near Vinton.

          Abram was a farmer and a barrel maker - a Cooper. The census records gives the information of Abram in 1850 as being 46 years, living in Huntington Township, Gallia County, a cooper worth $300. In 1850, George and Eve BOWMAN were 67 and 62, both born in Virginia, George a farmer worth $600. In 1860 Abram was listed as a farmer $600/350; 1870, a farmer, $800/382; In the 1874 plat book, Abram had several acres (under the name of A. Mac EWING) on the Raccoon Creek outside - east of Vinton, between G. BOWMAN and J.H. PORTER and R.B. CARTER (his sons-in-laws). In the 1880 census Abram was a farmer in Huntington Township, he was 75 years old and Betty was 69.

          Abram was the last of James EWING'S 22 grandchildren to die. Abram died in Vinton, Ohio on the 12th of February 1891 and was the 14th to be buried in the Indian John Cemetery. Betty preceded Abram, she died 19 July 1884 in Gallia County and was buried in Indian John Cemetery.

20-1         GEORGE BOWMAN EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Abram-Wililam-James


          George Bowman was born 17 August 1829 in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio.

          George was married twice, his first marriage was to Emily J. WALL on 16 January 1853, notes state that it was recorded in Book 2, Pg. 233, unsure as to what county in Ohio. In the "OBITUARIES FROM JACKSON COUNTY PAPERS" by James H. HOPKINS - Jackson Standard, 1843-1862 - Emily died 10 August 1854 at the age of 26 years.

          George and Lucinda SHIELDS were married 23 December 1856 in Evergreen, Springfield Township, Ohio by Andrew J. WATTS, J.P. Lucinda was born 16 May 1827 in Gallia County, Ohio, the daughter of Nathan and Sarah (MAY) SHIELDS. Both of Lucinda's parents were born in Virginia.

          The census show that in 1850 George was 20 and at home, a farmer; 1860-in Springfield Township, Ohio, a carpenter, -/$125.  George enlisted in Co. I, 103rd OVI, 16 August 1863.

George died 12 January 1864 at the Post Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

           There is a sketch on George in HARDESTY'S 1882 HISTORY, on page 2.

          George's widow, Lucinda, is listed in the 1890 and 1900 census. In 1890 she was receiving a pension, living in Evergreen. In 1900, she was living alone in Springfield.

Lucinda died 30 March 1903 in Evergreen, Springfield Township at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 28 days. She was buried in Pine Hill, Springfield Township, Ohio.

20-1-1      JOHN HENRY EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-Abram-William-James 


          John Henry was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, 27 October 1857. He and Anna Jean HALLIDAY, the daughter of Samuel and Jennette (MC KNIGHT) HALLIDAY, were married by the Reverend Thomas E. PEDEN on the 17 September 1884. Anna was born in Ohio, 6 January 1868.

          John Henry was the Clerk of the Courts in Gallia County for many years and supplied A.E. EWING with many family court recorded documents. In the 1880, John was a school teacher, living at home. In 1881 and 1882, he was the Springfield Township, Town Clerk.

          In 1900, John and Anna were living on Third Street in Gallipolis, Ohio. Living with them was Anna's mother, "Jennie", born in December 1831, New Brunswick, Canada. Anna's niece, actually a half niece - Jennie's granddaughter - daughter of her son by a previous marriage to James E. BRALEY. Leona BRALEY, born March 1882, the daughter of John B. and Julia (WOOD) BRALEY. Julia was a daughter of Sarah Hand SHIRES/WOOD - descendant of Caleb EWING.

          Leona was the niece referred to in a letter from John Henry to A.E. EWING of 17 January 1920 - "my niece who married a Cleveland attorney and moved to Colorado."

          John Henry died 6 September 1937 and was buried with Masonic rites in the Mound Hill Cemetery, Gallipolis, Ohio. Anna died in 1954 and was buried with John.

20-1-1-1          HENRY HALLIDAY EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      John-George-Abram-William-James


          Henry was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, 14 September 1885 and moved to Mission, Texas in 1912. He married Lucretia HUNTER

19 October 1916. Lucretia was born in Mission 7 July 1889.

          "Hal" was a Civil Engineer and was the City Engineer in Mission, Texas for over 40 years

          Henry died in Mission, Texas, 2 June 1960 and was buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery. Lucretia died 19 October 1964 in Mission and was also buried in the Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Ewing Family Lineage:      Henry-John-George-Abram-William-James


          Doris was born in Mission, Texas, 27 November 1917 and she and Bruce Lynn MARBLE, JR., were married 4 July 1942.

          Bruce Jr. was an Operations Director for a school district in Long Beach, California for 14 years. He retired in 1977 and they traveled throughout the United States. In the 1980's their official address was in Arlington, Texas.

Ewing Family Lineage:      Henry-John-George-Abram-William-James


          Hunter was born, 18 December 1918 in Mission Texas. His wife was Helen M. _____. He received his Bachelors Degree from Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas in Petroleum Engineering, 31 May 1940. In 1980 he was living in South Pasadena. He was a Supervisor of Valuations and Planning for the Union Oil Company of California in Los Angeles.

          Nina Fay was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, 27 April 1891. She and Roy ROTHGEB were married around 1915. Roy was born in 1885.

          Nina Fay died in 1952 and was buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire, Ohio. Roy died in 1963 and was buried in the Gravel Hill Cemetery with Nina and a George M. "1861-1938."

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Dorthea Ann ROTHGEB, b. 16 Jan 1916. Married: 1st Kenneth AMSBARY, son of Frederick and Fannie (FULTON) AMSBARY. Frederick was a dentist in Pomeroy, Ohio. She married 2nd FISHER

20-1-2      FRANKLIN E. EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-Abram-William-James


          Franklin was born 16 March 1859. He and Eleanor V. (Ella) PHILLIPS were married 2 December 1880 in Gallia County by Samuel S. DENNEY (5-232). Eleanor was born in 1859 and was the daughter of Abram PHILLIPS and Mary Jane CARR.

          Franklin died in Springfield Township, 4 April 1882 and Eleanor died 16 February 1884 according to Gallia County records. Both were buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio.

20-1-4      SARAH H. (SALLY) EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      George-Abram-William-James


          "Sally" was born 4 March 1863. On the 28 October 1885, she and Henry Lincoln MC GHEE were married in Gallia County, by M.D. VAUGHN. Henry was born in 1861. His parents were James MC GHEE SR. born 1815 in Pennsylvania and Amanda MC MULLIN, born 1818 in Pennsylvania. James and Amanda were married in 1839.

          In 1880, Sally was 16 years old and living at home. Henry was living with his parents in Morgan Township, Gallia County, Ohio. In the 1900 census they were living in Morgan Township.

          Sally died 18 August 1900 and was buried in the McGhee Cemetery, Morgan Township, Gallia County, Ohio.

          Henry remarried 1 July 1903 to a Nettie V. WALTER, age 35 the daughter of John and Eliza WALTER. Reverend Howey DENNY performed the ceremony. It was Nettie's first marriage. At the time of their marriage, Henry was a Vinton farmer. Nettie was born and raised in Morgan Township.

          Henry MC GHEE and Nettie had several children - the names listed in the notes were Walter, Earl, Helen and Georgia.

          Henry was at the 1926 Ewing Family Reunion in Ewington, Ohio.

20-2         MARY C. EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      bram-William-James


          Mary was born in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio, 21 July 1832. On 26 December 1861 she and James H. PORTER were married in Gallia County, Ohio by Hiram WILLCOX.

          James' birthday was believed to have been in 1828 or 1829 in Baltimore, Maryland. (A notation was made by his name "Pa, Mass, Ma. on ocean")

          In the 1850 census, Mary was 17 and at home, in 1860 she was listed as a "domestic." The 1870 census showed that Mary and James were living in Huntington Township where James was a journeyman blacksmith -/$300. In 1880 they were still living in Huntington Township where James was a blacksmith - but had hip joint trouble.

          Mary and James moved to Detroit, Michigan to live with their daughter Sarah Jane. After Mary's death in 1884, James moved to Goshen, Indiana to live with his son, Andrew.

20-2-1      MARGARET VERNETTA PORTER

          Margaret Vernetta was called "Nettie." She was born in Vinton, Ohio, 22 September 1863. Nettie was married to Charles Erwin DYER on 25 July 1887 by Samuel KERR in Gallia County, Ohio.

          The Dyers lived in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio until 1910, then they moved to Grand Rapid, Michigan.

          Nettie died at home in Grand Rapid on 5 December 1945. She was buried in the Fairplains Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

          Arthur was born in 1891 in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio and the only thing known about him was found in his obituary located in the Grand Rapids Press, dated 24 April 1953.

          Arthur died in the home of his son, Charles, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was buried in the Fairplains Cemetery, Grand Rapids. His wife died prior to 1953.

          He moved to Grand Rapids in 1910 and was employed by the Luce Furniture Company of Grand Rapids.

20-2-1-3          NELLIE DYER

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Margaret-Mary-Abram-William-James


          Nellie was born in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio in 1893. Nellie's first marriage was to Frank DAWSON. Clyde GOFF, was her second husband and this marriage took place on 15 April 1933 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was performed by Reverend Gladys NIENHRISE. This was the second marriage for Clyde also.

Clyde was born in 1889 in Osceola County, Michigan.

          In 1929, Nellie was second cook at the Union Depot. In 1933, Nellie was a resident of Grand Rapids and employed as a pastry cook. Clyde lived in Boyne Falls, Michigan and was in the restaurant business. In 1945 Nellie and Clyde were living in Boyne Falls.

20-2-1-3-1       WILLIAM DAWSON

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Nellie-Margaret-Mary-Abram-William-James 


          William was born in 1911 in Marion, Michigan. He was married to Cornelia CHASE on 15 October 1929 in Grand Rapids by the Reverend Ward K. KLOPP. Cornelia was born in 1919 in

Grand Rapids and was the daughter of William and Matilda (DE LATER) CHASE. William and Cornelia were divorced and William remarried in 1979 and was reported to be living in California.

          In 1932 William was arrested for a series of 10 holdups in 1929, along with Floyd LINSCOTT. William was sentenced to 15 to 25 years in Southern Michigan Prison. A newspaper article was found where the two were injured in a riot at the prison 24 July 1935.

20-2-1-4          MAUDE M. DYER

          Maude was born in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio on the 18th October 1895.

          In 1915 Maude and Raymond A. KITCHEN were married in Mendon, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Raymond was born in Putnam County, Ohio in 1891.       In 1935 Raymond was a furnace worker. Maude worked in the tool and die department of General Motors during the war. Raymond and Maude lived in Grand Rapids from at least 1935 until they died.

          Maude passed away 18 November 1957 in Grand Rapids and in May of 1978, Raymond died, also in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

20-2-1-5          HERBERT ANDREW DYER

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Margaret-Mary-Abram-William-James


          Herbert was born in either 1902 or 1903, North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio. He died between 1954 and 1979.

          Herbert was married four times. His third wife was Ida WELCOME, born in 1894. Ida died either the 5 or 6 September 1953 - the Saturday prior to the 7th, and he was buried in the Washington Park Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

          Herbert married Mrs. Modena (AUGUST) FOLTZ of North Baltimore, Ohio on the 20 November 1954 in Ada, Kent County, Michigan. Modena was born in 1898 in Wood County, Ohio, and was the daughter of Walter S. and Ida (MORROW) AUGUST.

          Herbert was listed as a lumber handler in 1935. In 1953 they resided on Front Street N.W., Grand Rapids. In 1954 he was a furniture worker and Modena was a seamstress.

          ISSUE that survived his third wife, Ida, their step-mother:

20-2-1-6          BEULAH DYER

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Margaret-Mary-Abram-William-James


          Beulah's birth eludes us, but her husband was Andrew DOMACK.

          In 1977 Beulah and Andrew were residing on a farm 2 1/2 miles from Litchfield, Hillsdale County, Michigan. It is felt that Beulah died between 1977 and 1979.

20-2-2      SARAH JANE PORTER

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Mary-Abram-William-James


          Born in March of 1865, Sarah Jane was listed in the 1880 census as being 16 and still living at home. She and George W. COOPER were married in 1890, but no record was located in Gallia County, Ohio.

          In 1900, Sarah Jane was a traveling evangelist with the Salvation Army and her husband, George, was an insurance agent.

At that time they were living in Detroit, Michigan.

          Sarah Jane was the chairperson of the Mary McNeil EWING Monument Committee in 1913. Her death occurred prior to 1945.

20-3         VERNETTA EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Abram-William-James


          Vernetta was born in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio the 6 August 1834. In the 1850 census, Vernetta was 15 and living at home, 10 years later in 1860, she was listed as being a "domestic."

          Vernetta married the Reverend John Harvey DENNEY, on the 28th of November 1867 in Gallia County. They were married by John E. HOLCOMB. John Denney was the son of John and Paulina (CARTER) DENNEY and his parents were born in North Carolina and Virginia. In the 1850 census, John and Paulina and their family lived two houses from Abram EWING.

          Reverend John Harvey DENNEY was born in September 1843 in Ohio. He enlisted as a Private in Co. L, 7th Ohio Cavalry, 20 Aug 1862. He served to 13 June 1865 and was mustered out at Gallipolis by order of the War Department. He was pensioned - diseased liver, but in 1890 records it says lungs.

          In the 1870 census, John was a Huntington Township farmer. In the 1880 census, John was still listed as a Huntington Township farmer, but he also was listed as a Baptist Minister. Vernetta died 8 October 1886 of "tyfoid" and was buried in the Holcomb Cemetery.

          John remarried 18 December 1890. Mrs. Agnes LITIGER was born August 1840 in Germany. The 1890 Special Schedule showed that Rev. John and Agnes lived in Vinton, Ohio. They also lived in Given's Station, Pike County. John attended the 1904 Ewing Reunion in Hillsdale, Michigan. Agnes died 28 June 1913 and is buried in the old Holcomb Cemetery.

          John was described in a letter as "having a long white beard and he didn't want to be buried next to either of his wives." He was living with his daughter Eva Jane at the time of his death in 1927. It is unknown where John was buried, but services were conducted by the Given's Chapel in Pike County.

20-3-1      MARY JANE DENNEY

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Vernetta-Abram-William-James


          Mary Jane was born in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio and was married to John Robert GOOCH in Gallia County by Reverend Reuben R. GOOCH on 21 October 1895.

          John was born about 1865 and his parents were James Robert and Mary Jane (WILLBARGER) GOOCH. His parents were married in 1843. This was John's third marriage. He was previously married to Alice WEED. Information on Alice was located in the CHERRINGTON GENEALOGY on page 153.

          Mary Jane and John lived at one time in Rio Grande.

          Mary Jane died 14 December 1935 in Scott Township, Sandusky County, Ohio and was buried in the Trinity Cemetery there.

          John died 12 June 1942.

          Lillian Dell was born in Gallia County, Ohio, 12 September 1892 and died 20 December 1967 in Bradner, Wood County, Ohio. She is buried in the Bradner Cemetery.

          Lillian was first married about 1904 to Lloyd SCHULTZ. Her second marriage was to John Frederick AMELING in Gibsonburg, Ohio on the 24 January 1929.

          John was born 23 December 1880 in Sandusky County, Ohio and he died 19 April 1953 in Bradner, Wood County, Ohio. He too was buried in the Bradner Cemetery.

          Earl and Gazella Mary FITGERALD were married 20 may 1925. Gazella's parents were Thomas and Maude (ENGLAND) FITGERALD. She was born 5 July 1901 in Ottawa, Illinois

          Earl joined the National Army in Fremont, Ohio, 4 September 1918. Battery E. 32 Artillery, CAC to discharge 26 January 1919. He was made Private First Class, 12 December 1918.

          Eva Jane's husband was John Frederick VOELKER. John was born February 1869 in Ohio and died 15 January 1929.

          In the 1900s Eva Jane and John were living in Beaver Township, Pike County, Ohio. They also lived in Waverly,

Pike County, Ohio.

          Fannie was born 5 February 1879, Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. The Reverend J. SMITH married Fannie and Daniel Eugene STEVENS on the 21st of August 1898 in Gallia County.

          Daniel was born 4 September 1871 in Coy, Ohio. Fannie and Daniel lived in Harris, Coy, and Marion, Ohio and Mt. Pleasant, West Virginia. He was a stationary engineer.

          Daniel died 31 October 1945 in Marion, Marion County, Ohio and was also buried there. Fannie lived until 18 April 1959. She died in Marion, Marion County, Ohio and is also buried in the cemetery there.

          Mabel was born 31 July 1909 in Marion, Marion County, Ohio. On 9 April 1931. Mabel and Donald William PHELPS were married in Marion. They graduated from Marion High School together, and were both in attendance at their 55 year reunion.

          William P. and Carrie (HUDSON) PHELPS were Donald's parents. He was born 6 August 1909 in Marion. As an adult, Donald was a cabinet maker.

          In 1982, the Phelps spent their summers in Lakeside, Ohio and their winters at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

20-4         JANE EWING

          Jane was born in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio 28 June 1838. In the 1850 census she was listed as being 11 and living at home.

          Robert B. CARTER, the son of Charles E. and Susan (MC MASTERS) CARTER was born in Pennsylvania. The year of his birth was given differently on different records. He was born 4 June 1830/1831 or 1834. In 1891 Robert's pension papers stated that he was 57 years old. Robert lived in Pennsylvania until 1851 when he moved to Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. In Vinton, he boarded with Abram EWING.

          Jane and Robert were married 4 September 1856. According to Robert's pension papers the marriage took place in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. But the marriage is not on record in Gallia County.

          In the 1860 census they were living in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Robert a wagon-maker worth -/$300.

          He was a 2nd Lt. Co. B, 36 OVI 12 August 1961 - 28 July 1862. The Ohio Roster says Robert enlisted 14 August 1861, 2nd Lt. Co. B., 36th OVI for three years. Discharged on the 10th of August 1862 by order of the War Department.

          He was 1st Lt. Co. C., 194th, 13 March 1865 - 24 Oct 1965. A.E. EWING'S refers to him as a colonel.

          In 1974, Robert and J.H. PORTER had acreage together on the Raccoon Creek at Vinton, Gallia County, adjoining "A. Mac EWING."

          In 1880 records show that Robert was a carpenter in Huntington Township, in 1890 he was in Vinton, complaining of varicose veins in the left leg and ankle. Robert died 23 January 1900 and was buried in the McGhee Cemetery.

          The 1900 census records state that the widow Jane was living in Vinton, a farmer, who owns her farm free and living alone. In 1910, she was still living alone on Jackson Street, 71, 3 & 3. Owns home free. Jane died 10 January 1917 while at the home of a daughter in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was returned to Vinton and buried in the McGhee Cemetery beside Robert.

          Ellen was born in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio 27 June 1958. She was married to Francis S. BAKER 2 August 1874 by H.R. HOWE, M.G. in Gallia County. Francis was born in Ohio in 1854.

          In the 1880 census, Francis was a Huntington Township farmer. His sister, Diadmina BAKER, 24, Ohio was living with them. They moved to Kansas between 1885 and 1889. They eventually resided in Buhler, Reno County, Kansas.

          Francis' death date is stated as December of 1891, but the 1900 census shows the Widow Ellen and all her children were living on G. Street East, Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas. In 1913 Ellen was living in Buhler, Reno County, Kansas

          Born in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio, 11 Feb 1860, Fannie married John R. MATTHEWS - her third cousin, once removed on

27 January 1881 in Gallia County. John was born in Huntington Township, Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio January 1860.

          John was the son of Josephus and Esther (MACOMBER) MATTHEWS and Josephus was the son of William and Letitia MATTHEWS of Virginia.

          In the 1880 census Fannie was 20 and living at home. John was also at home with his parents. In the 1900 census they were living in Huntington Township, he was a Railroad laborer and she was 2 & 2. His father, Joseph, was living with them.

          Vina E. was born in March 1882 in Vinton, Gallia County, Ohio. Her marriage to Prof. William H. DURKEE took place 31 December 1900 - there's was the last entry in the Gallia County Marriage Book 1851-1900. James H.F. PARKINS performed the ceremony.

          William was born in Virginia 1 January 1879. William's parents were John William and Susan (ZIMMERMAN) DURKEE. Both parents were born in Virginia.

          In the 1900 census Vina was 18 years old and attending school, although she could not be found in Huntington Township. Will was a professor at Ewing Academy. According to the Vinton Leader in 1906, he was in the Spanish American War. He was teaching school in 1910.

          Vina died during childbirth in 1921 and she was buried in the McGhee Cemetery. After Vina died, Will moved to Iowa. He married twice - Elizabeth MC ALEXANDER and Emma (1890-1980, Charitos, Iowa.)
