CHAPTER 22


ANDREW EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      William-James 


          Andrew Ewing was born 4 May 1809 in Pocahontas County, West Virginia when it was still Bath County, Virginia.

          On 16 February 1840 Andrew took as his bride, Taphena HOLCOMB in Gallia County, Ohio. Taphena was born in Gallia County, 9 June 1917 to Reuben Wetmore and Rebecca (NILES) HOLCOMB.

          Information on only 7 of their reported 15 children were found. The first 7 children are accounted for in the census, but only the first 4 were recorded in the Family Bible. One child, Gabriel, died when he was 2. There was a 5/6 year gap between Sarah and Reuben.

          It is recorded that on 25 March 1839, Andrew bought 73 acres in Section 6, Vinton County, Ohio when it was still in Gallia County. The n.w. 1/4 of the n.w. 1/4, Township 8 - Wilkesville, from the Ohio Company.

          In the 1840 census Andrew and Taphena were in Wilkesville Township, Gallia County, Ohio. In 1850 they were still in Wilkesville Township but now it was in Vinton County. Andrew was a farmer and his mother, Mary - age 84 (actually 79 year old) was living with them.

          They were in Iowa in 1853 where his sister and family, the Dodrills, were living and they were in Missouri before 1858. In the 1860 census, the family was living in Summersett Township, Mercer County, Missouri. Andrew was farming. In 1870 they were in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa, a farmer with grandson Andrew BYXBE, age 7, living with them. The 1880 census showed the family in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa. Andrew was 71 years old and "infirmed." Rebecca, son Reuben and two granddaughters, Mary E. and Taphena J. ROGERS were with them.

          Andrew was killed by lightening in July of 1885 in Wayne County, Iowa. Taphena died in 1889 in Harrison County, Iowa.

22-1  MARY E. EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Andrew-William-James


          Mary was born in Wilkesville, when it was still located in Gallia County, Ohio. In the 1860 census, Mary was 19 years old and at home in Summersett Township, Mercer County, Missouri. She married William R. BYXBE, 11 Oct 1860 - it is believed they were married in Mercer County, Missouri, although no record was located. William was born in Ohio in 1837.

          Mary died 3 August 1867 at the age of 27 years when her son, Andrew was 4 years old.

          The 1870 census located their son with his grandparents in Wayne County, Ohio. William could not be located. In the 1880 census William was found in Promise City, Iowa, a farmer, with his new family. William married Sarah E., born 1854 in Indiana and in 1880 he had 3 children, born 1874 - 1879.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    (only). Andrew BYXBE, b. 13 Mar 1963 - Illinois, d. 16 May 1884 - 21 years, suicide by hanging.

22-2  REBECCA EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Andrew-William-James


          Rebecca was born in Wilkesville, 5 February 1842 and married Alexander ROGERS about 1862. Alexander was born in Kentucky, either in 1832 or 1834.

          In the 1860 census, Rebecca was 18 and at home in Summersett Township, Mercer County, Missouri. In 1870 the family was in Goshen City, Mill Point Township, Mercer County, Missouri.

          Rebecca died 25 December 1874 in Wayne County, Iowa at the age of 31 years.

          The 1880 census showed that Alexander was in Burlington Junction, Nodaway County, Missouri with his new wife, Maggie, and family. Two daughters, Mary and Taphena were living with their grandparents in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa. Alexander married Maggie about 1876. Alexander was a wagonmaker.

22-3  THERESA A. EWING

 

Ewing Family Lineage:      Andrew-William-James


          Theresa was born in Wilkesville, Vinton County, Ohio, 28 September 1843. In the Family Bible, Theresa is called "Thirzy."

          Theresa was married two times. Her first marriage was around 1865 to a HALLEDAY in Wayne County, Iowa. Mr. Halleday died before 1880. Before the 1880 census, Theresa married for a second time. Her second husband was William P. GILBERT. William was born in New York in November 1823. William's parents were also born in New York.

          In the 1880 census, Theresa and William were located in Civil Bend Township, Union County, Territory of Dakota. William was a farmer, and was listed as crippled or disabled. In 1900 they were living in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.

          William committed suicide between 1900 and 1911. Theresa died 2 March 1911 in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin, near Wisconsin Dells, at the home of her daughter. She was 68 years

old.

          (It was Theresa who sent A.E. EWING the William and Mary Ewing Family Bible published about 1790, which Nancy Hanks Ewing had in her possession at the time of her death.)

                        2.    Alma/Elmer GILBERT, son, b. Jan 1878, Dakota Territory. 1880 census: "Elmer, 2, adopted son, birthplace of parents unknown" A letter mentioned: "Elmer, adopted, who married daughter of Senator PETTEGREW" - but Richard F. PETTIGREW, Republican 1889 - 1901 of South Dakota only had 2 sons. 1900: Alma, at home, listed as adopted son.

22-3-1      VIOLA ALMIRA HALLEDAY-GILBERT

          Although Viola was born a Halleday, she took her stepfather's name. She was not listed as an adopted daughter in the 1880 census as Alma/Elmer was.

          Viola was born in Wayne County, Iowa, 9 February 1867 and she married Edgar Murray ALDRICK about 1888. Edgar was born in New York in April of 1843.

          In the 1900 census the family was living in Greenfield, Sauk County, Wisconsin (136-7-36).

          Viola died 13 April 1924 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and is buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, .

          Arthur was born in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota the 8 February 1889 and was with his parent in the 1900 census in Sauk County, Wisconsin.

          Arthur married Lynde Marie VOSS. Lynde was born 7 August 1893. In 1924 Arthur and Lynde were living in Dundalk, Maryland.

          Arthur died 22 November 1949 in Dundalk, Maryland and is buried next to his mother in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, . Lynde died 24 July 1975 in Dundalk, Maryland and is buried with Arthur in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

          Arthur was born 11 December 1919 and died 29 January 1974 in Dundalk, Maryland. His wife, Belvia Irene BLACK was born on the 2 February 1913. In 1978, the widow, Belvia was living in Dundalk, Maryland.

22-4  SARAH LOUISE EWING

          Sarah Louise was born in Vinton County, Ohio, 2 January

1845. In Andrew's Bible she was "Sary Loisa." Wayne County, Iowa records give the marriage date of Sarah and John Baker WALLACE as 10 March 1865. John was born 11 February 1835 in Missouri. His parents were recorded to having been born in England.

          A.E. EWING's records at one point had Sarah and John living in Key, Arkansas, but John's brother lived in Keyes, Oklahoma, so the state may have been wrong.

          In the 1860 census, Sarah was 14 and at home in Mercer County, Missouri. In 1870, they were in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa. John was a farm worker and they were living next to Andrew. By the 1880 census they had moved to Washington Township in Lucas County, Iowa - right on the county line. (21-105-18-25). In 1900, John was a farmer and they were living in Raglan Township, Echo, near Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa. Harrison County is situated next to Wayne County. A granddaughter recalled when they lived in Raglan Township in a log cabin.

          John Baker WALLACE died 2 April 1902. On the 25 of June 1911 Sarah Louise died in Middle Fork, Idaho.

22-4-2      MARTHA ELLEN WALLACE

          Martha was born in Wayne County, Iowa, 7 October 1867. She was married to Lucius Carlton NILES in Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa on 30 November 1887 or 1889. Lucius was the son of Joseph and Nancy (ALEXANDER) NILES and they were born in Vermont and New Hampshire.

          Two records were found on Lucius birth - March 1866 or 21 March 1863. In 1900, Lucius was a farmer and the family was living in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa. The census recorded that they had been married 11 years and she had 4 & 4.

          Martha died 3 February 1957 in Harrison County, Iowa and Lucius followed a year later on 5 January 1958.

          Maude was born in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa,

10 April 1890. She was married in Logan, Iowa, 30 June 1911 to Orthello Vernellan BYERS II. Orthello was the son of Orthello Vernellan BYERS and Mary Ellen CORK/COOK and he was born in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa on 25 September 1888. Orthello died when he was 84 years old on 31 August 1965 and was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery.

          In 1975, Maude was in a rest home in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa.

          Harvey was born 30 May 1892 in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa. Harvey and Katie PAYNE were married in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa on 4 May 1920. Katie was the daughter of Charles and Luella (OWENS) PAYNE. Katie was born in Harrison County, Iowa the 19th of December 1892.

          Katie died in Com Rapids, Harrison County, 19 February 1974 and on the 23rd of July 1974, Harvey died in Com Rapids. They are both buried in the Soldier Valley Cemetery, Pisgah, Harrison County, Iowa.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Max A. NILES, b. 31 Mar 1922, Allen Township, Harrison County, Iowa. Married: 12 Mar 1944, Pisqah, Harrison Co. Iowa, Helen MC KENNEY. 1979: living in Com Rapids, Harrison County, Iowa.

          Earl was born 18 November 1895 in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa. He was married in Council Bluff, Pottawattamie County, Iowa on 11 October 1916 to Herma C. DONN. Herma was the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (HERMAN) DONN and was born 6 June 1899 in Harrison County, Iowa.

          In 1979 they had been married for 62 years and were living in Logan, Iowa.

          ISSUE:

          Martha Irene was born in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa on 17 May 1897. She and Louis Frank MICHAEL were married 26 November 1919 in Magnolia, Harrison County, Iowa. Louis was born 3 March 1895, the son of John and Catherine (HERMAN) MICHAEL. Louis died in Magnolia on 3 February 1950.

          In 1979, Martha Irene was living in Logan, Iowa.

          Sarah was born in Mondamin, Harrison County, Iowa, 24 April 1902. Sarah and Noah Edward WILSON were married 16 March 1924/1929 in West Point, Nebraska. Noah was the son of Thomas and Alice (HAINES) WILSON. He was born in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa the 20 September 1907.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Norma Darlene WILSON, b. 27 Jan 1925, Pisgah, Harrison County, Iowa. Married: 5 July 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska, Miller Morris BROOKS, b. 9 July 1925, Greenville, South Carolina.

          Grace was born 23 March 1907 in Harrison County, Iowa.

She married Melvin Jacob BARE, 16 March 1929, in West Point, Nebraska. Melvin was born 21 December 190 in Henderson, Mills County, Iowa.

22-4-3      LEWIS ANDREW WALLACE

          Lewis is recorded as being born in Missouri - 22 March 1869, but the family was in South Fork, Wayne County, Iowa in the 1870 census. Lewis married Debbie D. STEWART of Payette in 1899. They were married in Harrison County, Iowa. Debbie was born in Minnesota in September of 1874. Her parents were recorded as being from Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

          In the 1900 census the family was in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa where Lewis was a farmer. Lewis died on the 5th of January 1958 in Missouri Valley, Harrison County, Iowa and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery, Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

          George was born in Promise City, Iowa, 31 October 1871. He married his second cousin, Mahulda SIMMONS, in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa. Mahulda was the daughter of William R. and Sarah (DODRILL) SIMMONS.

          They were married on 12 November 1893/1894. Mahulda was born in Promise City, 28 October 1877.

          In the 1900 census, George was living in Raglan Township and working as a farmer.

          Mahulda died in Henderson, Mills County, Iowa, 28 June 1951 and was buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Hastings, Mills County, Iowa. George died 3 February 1963 in Hastings, Mills County, Iowa.

          Margaret was born in Mondamin, Harrison County, Iowa on

11 September 1901. Margaret's first husband was James Richard BISHOP, they were married 19 December 1918 in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa. James was born in 1899 and he died in 1948. He was buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Hastings, Mills County, Iowa.

          Margaret married Floyd TIBBLES in 1949. In 1979, Margaret and Floyd were living in Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa.

22-4-5      TAPHENA JANE WALLACE

          Taphena Jane was born in Wayne County, Iowa, 6 November 1874. She married William Daniel SHAW the 27th of July 1890 in Iowa. William was born in Iowa on 20 December 1864. His parents were recorded as being born in England and Missouri.

          The 1900 census showed that William was a farmer and the family was living in Ragland Township, Harrison County, Iowa. By 1907 the family had moved to Council, Idaho.

          ISSUE:

                        1.    Minnie Jane SHAW, b. 13 June 1891, Iowa, d. 29 Feb 1916, Idaho.

                        2.    John Henry SHAW, b. 30 Mar 1893, Iowa, d. 17 Nov 1968, Fruitland, Idaho.

          Gilbert was born 11 July 1877 in Iowa. He died in Modesto, California at the age of 89 years on 21 October 1966.

          In 1900 he was 23 and single, at home in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa, a farm laborer. He married Nellie BOTTOMS. Nellie had a daughter by a previous marriage and Gilbert and Nellie adopted two boys, John and David. There were no other issue.

          Harvey was born in Exline, Appanoose County, Iowa on 10 November 1880. In 1890 he was single, at home and a farm laborer.

          Harvey and Rena JAMES were married on the 24 March 1909.

          Harvey died in Payette, Idaho at the age of 91 years on 5 June 1971. In 1983, Rena was in a nursing home in Weiser, Idaho.

          Etla Louise was born 10 October 1883 in Iowa.

          Etla's first husband was Charles ROBERTS. There were several dates given as to when they were married: 1906, 1910 and 1916. But Charles' death date was given as 21 August 1913.

          Etla married a second time on 9 November 1933 to George MASHERSHOOK. George was born 15 November 1887 and died 20 March 1965. Etla died 5 June 1968.

          George and Etla lived for a number of years in Middle Fork, Idaho, and then they moved to Arkansas.

          No issue.

22-5  REUBEN HOLCOMB EWING

          Reuben was born in 1851 in Vinton County, Ohio. In the 1860 census Reuben was 9 years old and at home in Wayne County, Iowa. In 1870 and 1880, Reuben was still living at home with his parents in South Fork Township. Around 1885, he and "Ollie" FOWLER were married. "Ollie" is also Olive or Oliva on some records. She was born in Iowa in May of 1866.

          Reuben died in either 1896 or 1897 in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa - one report stated he was struck by lightning.

          Ollie married James DODRILL in 1898 and records showed that they were divorced in 1898. James was born 29 December 1843 in Huntington Township, Gallia County, Ohio and was previously found in Chapter 12 (#12-3-3.)

          Ollie married a third time in 1899 to Thomas ROTEN. Thomas was born in November of 1856. The 1900 census showed that Olive and Thomas were living in Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa with his children, her children and their children.

          William married Beulah about 1960.

          In the 1900 census William Harvey was living with his mother and step-father ROTEN in Raglan Township. William's birthday was recorded as being October 1889. William moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa then to Craig, Holt County, Missouri.

          Mildred was born 25 November 1924 in Cedar Creek, Cass County, Nebraska. She was married on 23 August 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska to Clarence Robert RAMBO.

          Clarence was in the Air Force for 18 years, serving mostly overseas. Mildred and Clarence were divorced in 1961.

          Mildred was married again in 1961 to Charles Loyd RAETHER.

Charles worked for the Swine Service Specialists out of Lyons, Nebraska. In 1979 Mildred was living in Corning, Missouri.

          Abner was born 5 February 1855 in Wayne County, Iowa, 33 years after the death of his grandfather William Ewing. In the 1860 and 1870 census Abner was living at home.

          On 30 April 1876, Abner and Mary Elizabeth ARMON were married in Wayne County, Iowa. Mary was born in Indiana, 3 March 1859. The 1880 census showed that Abner and Mary were living in South Fork Township, Wayne County, Iowa. In 1900 they were living in Henderson, Anderson Township, Mills County, Iowa.

          Abner died on the operating table of gangrene in the leg, 6 August 1908 in Anderson Township, Mills County, Iowa.

          Mary died 15 May 1925 near Silver City, Iowa and was buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Hastings, Iowa.

          William was born near Henderson, Mills County, Iowa the 4th of May, 1881. In the 1900 census he is found at home in Anderson Township, Mills County. He and Eva Bell (PORTS) PUCKETT were married 11 May 1901 in Woodard, Oklahoma.

          Eva was born in Missouri, 19 June 1883 and she died 17 June 1929 and was buried in Mc Cook, Nebraska.

          In 1925 William and Eva were living in Norcatur, Kansas.

          William married for a second time to Helen MOORE in October of 1938

          Phoebe was born 22 September 1889 in Caldwell County, Missouri and died 3 March 1976 in Red Oak, Iowa. Phoebe was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.

          Reuben married Hattie STEVENS HANDKE BROZER on 22 June 1935.

          In 1979 they were living in Walla Walla, Washington, he was in auto repair and she a teacher's aide.

          Ila Mona was born in Deertrail, Colorado on 18 May 1915. Ila and William E. ELLISON, the brother of Alva who married Ila's sister, Lila, were married 18 March 1938 in Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa. William was born in Missouri on the 14th of February 1907.

          William was a farmer in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

          Ila died 27 August 1979 in her home at Council Bluffs of a heart attack. She was buried in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa.

          Lila was born 22 April 1917 in Deertrail, Colorado. She married Alva Auston ELLISON - the brother of William who married Lila's sister, Ila Mona. Lila and Alva were married on the 23rd of December, but the year is unknown. The marriage took place in Mountain View, Missouri. Alva was born 28 February 1913.

          In 1979, Lila and Alva were living in Red Oak, Iowa where both were working in a battery factory.
